Today at 11am a green Porsche GT3-RS lost control and came from the street and crash into a tree. The 39 year old driver and his 40 year old wife dead directly....... very sad and best wishes to teir families...... I have to say that they had to be very fast..... the car looks so bad. And it looks like it had a cage.

    Very sad.

Porsche really needs to make stronger passenger compartments.

any automaker can make cabins stronger. They can make the entire car strong enough so the tree it hits would fall before the car is even dented. that just means the occupants would aborb 100% of the impact.

It's a good thing car makers employ real engineers.

The car had a cage & looks like a very, very high speed rear impact. No sports car could have survived that shunt.

Pure speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised if their necks were broken upon that violent rear hit. Very sad indeed.

That's not the point. If a 3 feet wide tree trunk can slice a car like that, I'd be concerned. That's all. Car being destroyed is just fine. Breach of the passenger cabin in that fashion is unacceptable.

    you can't be serious...

cars are not built to withstand that an impact like that, no car is for that matter, if they were they wouldn't be a porsche anymore...

that hit occurred at one of if not the weakest parts of a car, across the doors. big opening, not a lot of structure, high speed impact = bad things.

As tragic as that accident is, my compassion for someone driving at an extreme speed (as that driver obviously did) at roads surrounded by trees is somewhat limited...

The McLaren F1 has a seriously robust passenger compartment. Nevertheless, a reckless driver killed himself and his passengers by hitting a tree at high speed.
Is there really and issue with Porsche occupant protection relative to other cars and the current accepted standards?

dude, thats a very big tree, I think you would be amazed at just how strong a tree is. a tree even half that size would have yielded an almost similar result.

    I hate to see this.

My 1st thought goes to "was this driver experienced enough for this type of car?" You know what I mean... Driver has the wherewithal to buy the car but has never thought once of advance performance driving with a driving school or perhaps some track time. But once he / she is behind the wheel of a car like this they naturally assume they are Speed Racer (we all know the type).

Of course it could have been an avoidance maneuver that put them into this peril - or who knows what (no matter how much experience).

Still, I have seen much more than my share of drivers with way more car then they can handle, and the result normally looks like this shown. So terribly sad an innocent passenger was involved too.

    Let me get this right!

I voiced a concern about the integrity of passenger cabins on the car. And just few days ago I saw a 996 convertible folded into half.

Basic responses are "dude that is a big tree", "it happens to F1 too", "it happens to Ferrari", "I can quote an outlier case and that is sufficient to contradict a general trend" etc. Sheesh! Do you guys even realize the absurdity of your arguments?

It is that hard to understand that a 200lb roll cage or a better cabin construction could have saved the two occupants. F1 drivers walk away from much worse crashes.

I am done with this debate. I have more respect for two people who died than a piece of metal & plastic with a logo on top.

    RIP.
