Yeah, not a mention about the potential 3500 lb curb weight from any other posters here. Are they all too overcome with its beauty...
if it weighs 'only' 3500lbs...that would still be superb considering the hardware onboard. however, Porsche claims '3285 lbs' so it's pretty darn reasonable. i hope this car makes it into production!
I agree, having gone back and forth from Porsche to Ferrari. This is the first (potential) new car from either marque in the last decade or two that is really lustworthy. It makes the R8 and Gallardo look absolutely outdated, and while I haven't seen a 458 in the metal yet I think the 918 may eclipse it visually and potentially on the track.
+1 this car has some wicked hardware. now if the road version doesn't get watered down too badly...ooh watch out.
Porsche claims this car is faster around the Nurburgring in less than seven-and-a-half minutes or so says Porsche chief Michael Macht. If you don't believe him Walter Rohrl concurred, saying "This car goes even faster than the last super sports car from Porsche, the Carrera GT" http://www.thelocal.de/society/20100302-25605.html So, apparently this is a working prototype and not just a concept.
Just watched some of the video of the new Porsche 918 hybrid supercar. One can only hope that they make a production version. Would probably be very expensive. But what a car! Love the removable steering wheel. I can only imagine guys pulling up to valet, throwing them the keys, giving then a $20, and then sitting at the table with the steering wheel! Congratulations Porsche!
Yeah, grab a seat at the bar and put the Porsche steering wheel right there. Women will certainly notice. And probably leave, but still, pretty cool.
Interesting. It will be tough to upstage the CGT in my book but P is on the right track. Can't wait to see it in the metal.
Those Porsche engineers are something else, impressive stats. Not a big fan of the styling, there is a lot going on there but I would like to walk around it for a day or two.
More info: http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/porsche-918-spyder-2010-02-02?utm_source=newsletter4&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Group4C In this view, the wheels have some kind of aero cover that looks awful. Hopefully a production version would come up with something completely transparent, or else a different wheel design that creates less drag.
Metal eh I think it's a CF monocoque...but I know what you mean. The EVO Magazine vid of Chris talking with the project lead was great to get some insight into the car.
You said it Pete! The 918 looks absolutely amazing. The wheels have that classic DTM touch and the rest of the styling looks phenomenal.
it's pretty light considering the lithium-ion pack, the electric motors and assoc electronics. keep in mind the CGT was a tad under 3100 lbs.
The Valets in So Cal always want your key. I don't like to give them my key- that's just me being paranoid about the valet driving my car. If I could take the wheel, then I wouldn't mind giving the valet the key! (but my post was also an attempt to be funny)
Just noticed that the side mirrors on the 918 are not mirrors at all! They look like small video cameras! This is something I had been dreaming about for some time. The small camera has much better aero than a large mirror. I also was thinking about a way to better see the 3/4 blind spot . If you had another small camera pointing outward from the 3/4 area then you could see everything from the display.
The wheels are heinous, otherwise the car i striking and can't believe they were able to keep this under wraps while doing 'Ring tests, etc.
Received a very nice letter and brochure from Detlev von Platen (President and CEO) of Porsche Cars N.A. regarding the 918. Seems that Porsche is considering production of the 918 Spyder concept based on the interest level of prospective buyers. The letter asked me to confirm my interest by April 24, 2010 (by filling out a pre-printed information card)and in doing so will be offered consideration to purchase the vehicle if it is produced. If I were a betting man I would say the the car will come to production and if it's anything like the concept in appearance, performs as promised, and is a hybrid to boot - I'd imagine it would be a hard car to pass up!
