Great thread! I would love to see some photos of the flywheel re-pack when you get to it. thanks, Dave
As recommended by FBB and others I decided to check the cam pulleys to ensure that everything is lined up as per spec. I couldn't remember who has my degree wheel so I made my own. The socket was a little loose so I added some electrical tape to tighten it up. I need to bring my drill press from home Not a bad fit for an eyeball freehand job Dial indicator installed with calibrated chopstick with a dimple in the end Degree wheel glued in place Picture of the whole mess I checked the valve timing and everything lined up as per the book. Now I can take the belts and pulleys off, weld the fences, clean everything and start the re-assembly process. Hey everyone I have been rather busy with other stuff so I haven't had time to post anymore. Work has been on-going and if the rest of the bits arrive this week I hope to be done next weekend. In the meantime here are some more pics. Cams out - waiting for the shims to arrive. I only had to adjust 5 valves that where a little to tight for my liking. All of the rest where well withing spec. Camshaft holding shims - a la coffee cup hot sleeve. Using the old timing belt to hold the cam drive pulley while I tighten it. Cam pulley fences all spot welded in place. TDC is set and cams are installed and lined up. Everything in place and engine rolled over by hand to double check the alignment. Valve covers refinished and back in place. Upper intake back on. Waiting for 2 new fuel pressure regulators. Plumbing and wiring harness in mostly in place. Some close-ups of the pulley spot welds. I wished that I could have gotten the pulleys cleaner but my media blasting cabinet is still on back order. I picked up the Magnaflow cats yesterday and will be fabricating the pipes next week. I hope to have some more pics soon. Thanks for following along. Installed the fuel pressure regulators and vacuum hoses today. 3 or 4 more hours and it will be ready to re-install. I am dropping off the clutch disks to be re-faced in the morning and will take some pics before installation
Lower driven gear all fixed up + Hill Engineering bearings. Lookin' good ! Image Unavailable, Please Login
When you reinstall the little belt "guide" shoes, the one's that run on the top of the belt, (you know, the things you had to drill a hole in the screw to get off) DO NOT have them touching the belt. Leave at least a 1mm gap between them and the belt, or what would amount to the width of a matchbook cover folded over. They are to help prevent the belt from jumping off the pulley in the even of belt slap. If you have them touching the belt, we have seen signs, in the form of rubber dust, causing the belt to wear from the top = not good. So be sure to leave a little gap between the belt and the guide shoes.
Ernie Thanks for the advice. I assumed that there was supposed to be some clearance but hadn't found a spec yet.
Thanks for the nice posts. BUT LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING...FROM MY EXPERIENCE AND LOOKING AT THE BELT I WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU WENT ON TIME. LUCKY GUY AND I'M GLAD. BUT DON'T DO IT AGAIN. CHANGE THE BELT EVERY 3 YEARS OR TWO IF DRIVEN NOT OFTEN. THIS MONDIAL T/348 BELT IS THE MOST STRESSED OF THEM ALL. TWO LONG AND DRIVES EVERYTHING!! JUST AN ADVICE. CHEERS. P.S. I'm sorry for the huge letters...
nice work and great documentation. How did you refinish the valve covers? The ones from my 308 QV are at the powder coaters now for textured-red coating. cheers
I agree 100%, the car was brought to me with the fusebox melted down last September and I purchased it from the owner several weeks later. The previous owner had indeed neglected it.
I am sure that the powder coated method will last longer than the method that I used. I used 'regular' wrinkle paint made by VHT. Wrinkle paint is getting harder to find in any colour other than black but I was lucky to find it at the local performance store Thanks everyone for the interest and kind words of encouragement. Jamie
Daniel The removal of the cam drive gear and tack welding of all the fences came directly from one your posts. 3 of the fences where loose, 2 of them on the cam drive gear!!!
I also had bought a rattle can of VHT wrinkle red, but got a little nervous hearing stories about needing to carefully heat the paint (with a hot air gun, UV lamp, etc) to get a good wrinkle. If you post a close-up of the finish I'll post one of my powder-coated ones after they're done this weekend for comparison. BTW - I'm using VHT clear on the intake and down-draft runners, looks great now hopefully won't yellow too fast. cheers Kurt
just an update on the Mondial. It has been patiently waiting to finish the engine and re-install it, and would have been done by now except we where running out of room. My business partner and I decided to lop off 10' of interior office space. (I mean who needs a file room in today's paperless society?, right?) In any event we hired a contractor, moved the wall, re-balanced the hvac unit, epoxy coated the floor (we did that part) and the final piece to do is reposition the sprinkler heads up to warehouse height instead of office height. That will be done hopefully next week. Next event is the brutal clean-up or the "do we really need this thing or does it go to Goodwill or the dumpster" exercise? In any event just show that the thread isn't dead, I have included some pics. The first 3 are kind of a 360 degree view. The last one is the Mondi engine still under wraps *sigh* Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
what a workshop! Right after the Mondi is done you need to hang some posters up, at least a babe calendar cheers
Indeed we shall...if I can find one. The only people that seem to have those these days are the 'Wurth' fastener people.
I have been working away these past couple of weeks and am getting closer to completion. The shop is pretty much finished with a couple of minor details to get out of the way but they can wait until driving season is finished. Onwards and upwards...where else can we go from here? I have included comments with some of the pics. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
flywheel repack and clutch replacement. Car only has 18,000km on it so the flywheel wasn't that bad. I decided to deal with it while it was apart. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
