I'm helping a friend put a rear main seal in a 83 308. Did I read here correctly that one of the nuts, holding the drop gears on, has LH threads? (Yes, I tried a search)

What? I just replaced the clutch on my '78 308 GTS. ALL of the fasteners were right handed.

The counter shaft in the trans I believe and you shouldn't need to remove it to get to the rear main seal. The clutch and input are both right hand I'm pretty sure.

I found step by step instructions somewhere on the net and it clearly states both these nut are RH.

But I spent a couple hours last night trying to get these loose.

Picked up a bigger compressor and 650 ft pound impact wrench today I'll try that tonight.

    Any suggestions?

Thats one of my pictures, and yes the nuts in that picture are Standard RH thread. Do you have the right ring nut tool? I just put the trans in 1st gear, drifted the nut lock collars back into an upright position and they came right off with the ring nut tool I had using my 1/2 inch impact on low pressure (at the gun).

Here is the whole sequence if it helps:

    Rick,
Yes that's your pick you sent me the link in my Rear Main Seal thread.

Mine aren't coming off but like I said I have a new imact gun to try tonight.

Do you know where the step by step instructions are located?

Here's what I did to loosen the ring nut. Big breaker bar with a long extension supported by a block of wood. I stuffed a shop towel in the gears to keep the engine from turning and the nut loosened right up with no drama.

Also, if all you need to do is remove the bellhousing to get to the clutch, you only need to remove the lower nut. The upper does not need to be removed.

Oops, yes I was thinking further along the line in the transmission. My mistake and sorry for the confusion. This also holds true for a 246 Dino. I as well use an impact to do this.

To the OP, good luck with the project!!!

Well my new impact gun took that nut off in about 5 seconds. Now I am having a hard time seperating the bell housing. Seems the last fool sealed it with RTV which is not helping matters.

    Any special techniques for that?

I used a scrap piece of metal and made a puller. Two of the transfer case cover studs are almost directly in line with and are slightly longer than the transmission input shaft. I drilled two holes in the piece of scrap an bolted it to the studs. By slowly and carefully tightening the nuts, the puller pulled the bellhousing away from the back of the engine and broke the RTV seal. Do NOT use your impact hammer for this. The nuts only need to be tightened a little bit. Once the seal is broken, remove the puller and pull the bellhousing off by hand.
