    Looks like cam position sensor to me. Check the parts diagram to be certain. Three conductor, yes? Male side would be easiest to just get a new Bosch cam position sensor. For the female side, talk to Dave Helms, he carries all the various tools and parts to fix them.

    yes, it is 3 pin connector. I think i've been driving my car with this plug disconnected. Female side looks OK, just the male side. The cable is quite short.

    This is the connector of the left bank knocking/detonation sensor. The sensor is bolted on the engine block (in the center of the V) between cylinders 6 and 7.
    Definitively not the cam sensor or throtle potentiometer, they are both on the right bank on the 5.2.

    +1, I was just studying this on the Ricambi America site parts diagrams this morngin, and there is only one cam position sensor on the 355 (sorry, my car was not around for me to inspect and many V8's have two...my BMW does)

    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&P=&V=diag&I=1449 it is clearly the knock sensor. The quick fix would be to replace the knock sensor. Can't find the specific drawing that gives the part number for the knock sensors, but you can clearly see them in the above diagram.

    Excellent guys, thanks for your help. Looks like the male connector is part of the wire harness that goes back to the ecu. I will have to cut the cable, and install a new male 3 pin amp connector.

    To do the job correctly, you need to have the pin removal tool, so you can cut the pins off right where they meet the wire, to conserve wire. I would plan on replacing the boot, since they are all marginal at best, even if it is not yet cracked or torn. You will need the pins, and new connector, as well as the special double crimp tool. Contact Dave Helms for all the stuff. It is a small investment to have the stuff, and then you can fix virtually any connector in the engine compartment! ;)


    Actually, upon further inspection, it looks like the male pin side is the knock sensor cable. There is no rubber boot on that side right? I would simply order a new knock sensor rather than bother repairing it.

    It is the knock sensor side, there's not rubber boot. Does anyone know the part no. and cost?

    I was thinking of repairing the plug as follows:

    Remove the cracked plug, and expose the pins
    Prepare a new male amp connector with lead and 3 spade plugs
    Connect the spade plugs to the exposed pins, use heat shink to cover the connection points
    connect the male plug to the female plug

    What do you do think?

    Just strip them back and solder them. **** the plug off! :eek::eek:

    Sourcing the parts and tools is a pain. Dave Helms has them, but it would be much simpler to just get a new knock sensor.
