Just finished 2009 taxes and February invoices, time for a Scotch! Nothing fancy tonight, reached over the Macallan Fine Oak 15 for the Dewars 12.
Saw this thread and couldn't resist. Although I'm mainly an Islay man, the MacAllan 15 Fine Oak is a beautiful thing. Probably my favorite of the highland malts as the finish lets the heather come through clean and crisp. As to my true love, anything Laphroaig gets my vote but the 1/4 cask is my favorite. Just a wee bit of water to bring everything to the front and I can close my eyes and smell an ocean breeze while I sip it. It is my absolute 1st choice as it has more character than any other I've ever tried. Highland Park 12 yr is an excellent choice at a very reasonable price as is the 12 yr Balvenie Double Wood. The Sherry Cask does take out some of the traditional Scotch character, but what it gives back is a pleasant change of pace. If I'm going for a safe traditional blend, 15 yr Pinch does the trick for me. I enjoy a smokey, peppery bite and it delivers every time. For breaking in virgins, William Grants is an easy bet at a very reasonable price. I could go on for a good bit, but I'd much rather drink it than talk about it.
I used to always get Oban 14 but since they raised the price over $40 (its about $75 locally now), I've mostly held off. I've really been enjoying Macallan Cask Strength lately - its surprisingly smooth. Regards, Art S.
I like Island of Geese. It's a 10-year-old Islay blend. Light and drinkable with plenty of the peaty traits which mark Islay whiskeys. It's no Lagavulin, but for those times when you want something lighter, it's really good.
tonite's fare: Chivas Regal as I watch the Cards/Dodgers game. sub-par baseball calls for sub-par scotch and for the record, I'm cleaning out my inventory of crap so I can buy some good stuff

It looks like 'ol Dr. S put some fruit in the scotch too! Oy! If he did, it had better not have been single barrel or he'll need to be reported, to somebody! Fruit in my bourbon for an Old Fashioned is as far as I will go.
