    Hello fellow "F"-Chatters,

I could use a little instruction (step-by-step) for my 79 308 engine pan and trans pan R/R. I started by taking off the 14-nuts and was cautious on trying to pry off the pan. Should it easily come off?

Should I use gasket sealer, also what Foot Pound should I use on re-tourqing?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, diagrams to are helpful.

On a side note: I noticed while poking around down there, the rear (closest to the trunk) exhaust manifold aluminum shield (the bottom end) had a few small dents, as if someone tried to adjust the cable that runs under it. Was this possibly from the factory?

    Thanks a lot! Chris.

I read the archived posts and am totally blown away to how difficlut this is.
I'm within a nanasecond of just saying screw this, let it leak like a pig!

Anyone have any other simple idea? Does the entire dipstick tube need to be extracted?

Does anyboy know if new 40dcnf's are currently available?

Also - what do the suffix numbers mean ie what is the difference between -12 -35/36/37/38 and -45/46/47/48

    thanks

AFAIK, the -12 version is the only "commercially available" 40DCNF. It can be made to work on a 308, but it has 5 fairly major differences: 1) it uses the 4-bolt top cover (whereas all of the stock F 40DCNF use the 5-bolt top cover), 2) it can't use the (separate) stock sculpted 308 airhorns, 3) the action of the choke mechanism lever is reversed so can't work with the stock choke cable/linkage, 4) the mixture screws don't point in the same directions (so making mixture tweaks almost requires removing the airbox; whereas, on the stock 40DCNF you can do this with a long screwdriver and the airbox in place), and 5) the -12 mixture screw uses a larger end cone angle (so, while on a stock F 40 DCNF the mixture screw might be out 4-5 turns on average, on the -12 the mixture screw might be out 2 turns on average.

The diffences in the "sets" (35/36/37/38, 45/46/47/48, 72/73/74/75, etc.) is related to the progression holes, the replaceable bits (emulsion tubes, jets, end effectors on the shafts, etc.), and having both mixture screws angled to the appropriate side.

In 1990, Geoff Ohland at Partsource indicated to me that he had access to the last new 72/73/74/75 set left on the planet, but the price was a little steep ($3K IIRC). I bought a set of the -12 (and transferred over the replaceable bits), but, if I had it to do again, I would send my original set to Pierce Manifolds for rebuilding (the price was about the same) -- JMO.

Thanks, that is really helpful. (And sorry I realise I posted on completely the wrong thread. Joys of the iPhone).

From the Eurospares catalogue, it looks like the set for the 1979 cars would be Weber 40 DCNF 57 - 58 - 59 - 60. Anyone got a spare set ;-) !!

I'm thinking about purchasing a sonic bath and rebuilding myself probably

Another tip you can find here:
    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=241497&highlight=dipstick+removal

The hard part is really removing the short tube that fits inside the union (see above). The rest is relatively easy.

Yes, I believe that's correct for a euro version '79 308. You don't give your location nor version, but, for a US version '78-'79 308, it would be 72-73-74-75.

Monday, a friend and i replaced the pan gaskets, installed the sump baffle and finished the installation of Sean's polyurethane motor mounts.

The hardest aspect of the job was getting the old gaskets off. During the final clean up phase, we discovered that solvent or lacquer thinner really softened up the glue.

We used a bent piece of coat hanger to fish out the bottom dip stick tube with no problem.

Since the right front mount was off, the tube mount nut removal was fairly easy.

Just for grins, we used sealing washers, nylock nuts and "the right stuff" to put the pans back on.

    good luck,
    chris

Right stuff seals all. You could take the bolts back out and that pan would stay on forever.
