Ohhh ignorance. I own a Pitbull and a Rottweiler. They're both the sweetest pets imaginable. There are no bad pets (well, rarely there are)... Just bad owners and stupid people.

Oh and for what it's worth .. My pitbull was a rescue dog who had a difficult life when he was a pup - we got him when he was about 2 years old. He's displayed nothing but love and affection for people.

A house went up for rent in my neighborhood after the owner died. A lady moved in with 5 children and tried to start a business selling drugs from her home....I guess she was a fan of Showtime'***** TV show "Weeds"(we live in a nice neighborhood, not exactly the hood)

Well the first thing she did was buy a Pit Bull and tie it to the front porch.
With-in a week she was busted for animal cruelty, child endangerment and a few other crimes. Our neighborhood was relieved. (the funny thing is they didn't arrest her for selling drugs...I guess that took to much effort for the police department to prove).

The biggest problem with the dogs is the type of people who are buying them to enhance their "bad boy" image. Its the owners who matters, when it comes to dealing with a powerful dog...its too bad for pit bulls (and the public) that thugs, want-to-bees, and criminals have made the pit bull one of their top status symbols. The people with the least amount of skills and resources for raising a training a dangerous breed, are the people that seem most interested in owning a large number of them.

You have to admit, if you life has turned to crime and gangs... you haven't shown the best judgment in raising yourself correctly. Now give that person a dangerous animal that needs the proper upbringing... good luck! That's why states will have to pass laws to protect the public from pit bulls. It has less to do with the breed and more to do with criminals and gangs arming themselfs with these animals as weapons.

Our police should be doing something more to clean up the cities and arrest gang members and violent offenders. There are parts of Miami that the police don't even go into due to how dangerous they are. How does that work? Send a heavily armed task force in and clean things up.

Wait--I just got an idea. Rather than crack down on the number of pit bulls, maybe EVERYONE should have a pit bull. That way nobody would be defenseless against one!

People seem to think that pit bulls start off as fighters from the moment they're born. They have bait dogs to train pit bulls to fight for a reason. I know several pit bull owners - and as I mentioned, I myself a rescue pit - and all of their dogs including my own are great with children, adults and other animals. Sit on the floor with my dog and he comes and curls up in your lap. You're telling me that he's a vicious dog?

As I said, the issue is people, generally it is not the dog itself. My last rottweiler was a mean dog, you can blame that on the trainer who beat him when he was left in his care for 12 days while on vacation.

But Todd, they are good dogs, they don't mean to hurt anyone. They had a bad upbringing, they came from a broken home, and other such BS.

Here is a update, owner has been identified

Officials Locate Owner Of Dog That Mauled 5-Year-Old
LA/SPCA: No Prior Complaints Against Animal, Owner
    POSTED: 10:39 am CDT April 2, 2010
    UPDATED: 10:52 am CDT April 2, 2010
    Email Print

The LA/SPCA said Friday morning it has located the owner of the dog that critically injured a 5-year-old Gentilly girl on Wednesday.

The owner was cited for owning a vicious dog, allowing it to roam and for failing to show proof of rabies vaccination.

The pit bull terrier mauled the girl after charging at her Wednesday evening. The LA/SPCA said the owner believes someone let the animal out of an enclosed yard with a 12-foot high fence.

No prior complaints had been filed against the dog or the owner.

The victim remains hospitalized with serious hear injuries. Several other children who were present at the time of the attack were unhurt.

The incident is one of two attacks in New Orleans involving pit bull terriers and children this week. The second such attack happened Thursday in Algiers, where a 7-year-old girl was bitten by a loose dog.

This is two in a week in New Orleans alone, this breed needs to be banned

Oddly enough if you actually research the breed, pitbulls were actually bred NOT to attack humans so that their handlers could break up fights easier. Sure they would maul the hell out of other dogs, but humans could put a hand in the middle of it safely to separate the dogs.

Other interesting facts (just google them if you think I'm making it all up, I really don't feel like copy and pasting everything right now)

-Dogbitelaw.com (referenced earlier in this thread stating over 60% of all fatal dog attacks) is owned by a lawyer who specializes in suing people in dog attacks. They like to use percentages a lot on that site because there are actually very few dog related fatalities amongst humans per year

-The average number of fatalities as a result of dog attack per year is under 30. This includes deaths that are not always the direct result of dog attacks (see earlier in the thread, people getting infections etc)

-Statistically speaking, you are more likely to die from lightning strike than dog attack.

-I live in Portland Oregon, in the past few months 2 UNARMED people have been killed by the police under suspicious circumstances/ In that time, nobody has died from a Pit Bull attack. Based on the overwhelming statistics, I think we should ban police.

You get the idea. I'm pretty neutral on Pit Bulls honestly. They do require proper care and are unfortunately owned by negligent owners. Combine that with the media craze over them and you get a lot of things blown out of proportion. The solution is proper training of owners, but while that sounds good on paper, actually implementing it is another story.

I personally would have no problems owning one. One thing I saw earlier in this thread that was interesting is the Pit Bull ban in Denver. A good friend of mine lives just outside of Denver in Westminster and owns several and works at a local rescue that works specifically with Pit Bulls all the time. Never heard him mention a ban to me.

and yet another attack from the cute and cuddly breed

7-Day-Old Fla. Infant Fatally Mauled by Pit Bull

    AP

A 7-day-old Florida baby was fatally mauled by a pit bull terrier as the child apparently lay next to his sleeping teenage mother, police say.

printemailshare recommend (0) NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Police say a pit bull terrier fatally mauled a 7-day-old Florida baby as the child apparently lay next to his sleeping teenage mother.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office in New Port Richey says the seven-day-old the boy was attacked Wednesday and died shortly after.

Neighbors told the St. Petersburg Times the 16-year-old mother didn't discover her son was dead until a neighbor knocked on the mother's door and woke her around noon. They said mom answered the door, then turned around and saw what had happened to her newborn son.

Neighbors said the dog belongs to the baby's father. It was taken away by county animal services.

New Port Richey is a suburb about a half hour north of Tampa.

That's just a messed up story all around:

    --16 year-old mom
--sleeping with a newborn baby right next to her
--she's so out of it that a dog mauls the infant right next to her but doesn't wake up?!
    --until noon
--dog doesn't even belong to her

I'm going to step waaaaaay out on a limb here and speculate about this dog. I'm getting a gang-banger slum-scum vibe with an aggressive attack/fighting dog. I'm almost calling bullstuff on the full story. Why/how would a dog do this without 1) waking the mom and 2) attacking the mom?

Just saw the story on the local news tonight. So sad.

I have a few high school kids that live around me... They seem to have a new set of goals these days. Its amazing to watch what today's "bad boy" culture kids think is "cool"

    - drop out of high school
    - have a baby
    - buy a gun or pit bull so you feel powerful

I've talked to their parents, and we just can't figure what happened to the go-go yuppie kids of the 80's (we all had Lamborghini posters on the wall, and wanted to go to college, to be successful like Donald Trump). Kids sure have changed! But then again, so has my Mtv. I think Mtv started in 1982 when I was in high school. They use to play music. It was a different time.

It`s very simple, kids nowadays are infested with superficialism. The media, TV, glass, internet promote non values, kids just copy what they see everyday all day long.

If you see only SUV`s on 22 inches, tatoos and big titted bimbos, probably you wouldn`t want to be a boeing engineer....

So what you're saying is that engineers aren't into SUV's with 22's, don't have tattoos and don't like big tits?

I think a lot of successful people here will resent your comments.

As a dog fan: no child should EVER be left unattended with a dog. Any dog. One would think it is a matter of common sense, but there you go.
