Guys My 328 is running on 4 cylinders. The rear bank is at fault. How can I check to see if it is the coil or module that is at fault? Any tests that I can do? Thanks all!!!!
The dist cap/button/rotor/coil wire on the bad bank might also be the problem. I'd have a quick look inside the cap (since that's easy) -- if that seems OK, swap modules -- if the problem "moves" to the other bank = bad module; if problem stays on same bank, swap coils...
I would also take a quick peek at the extenders. Mine dropped a bank and the culprit was a small, pencil tipped sized burn in one of the extenders.
If you determine the fault to be the module let us know (or do a search for WAI and/or module) - you can get replacement for $16 vs ~$900 for the entire coil.
Also reminder not to run it on 4 as the 328 still dumps fuel in your unfiring bank, doesnt take long for exhaust to glow orange and many of the 328 fires are started because of this.
Guys I have swapped the modules as this was easy with no change, so assume that they are both working? Removed the dissy cap, I think all looks ok but would I expect to see a lot of wear on the centre pin? should the pin stick out quite a bit? I did "gently" open up the string length to make it more springy. The end of the pin looked quite smooth to me? Not yet refitted to give the car another go. My friend has tested the coils off the car doing a static check and both give the same readings? not yet swapped them over to try but would they change under load? Getting worried now!!!!
Check the wire from the coil to the distributor. Also check carefully if the distributor is not cracked
Damn I swapped the coils today and the problem is now on the other bank!!! Therefore it must be the coil that is at fault? strange how they were tested off the car and both gave out the same readings? Can they break down under load? Where can I purchase a new coil from without it costing silly money?
Since you've swapped modules already, it must be the coil. There's one on EBay for 475$ http://global.ebay.com/FERRARI_MONDIAL_32_328_412_TESTAROSA_IGNITION_COIL/360208921169/item Or 384£ from FerrariParts.co.uk ....
Ouch! thats some price... Thanks for the pointer I may need to bite the bullet and get my wallet out unless I can find a breaker?
You don't need the heatsink, but, if you can find no other source, www.allferrariparts.com has a slightly better price on the whole enchilada. Try a search on AEI600A, and look thru the TR crossreference thread or search here on "TR coil" (I believe 328 and early TR use the same Marelli coil with the spade connectors).
This exact thing happened to me 3 years ago. My problem (and a common one eventually for these cars) was a bad crank position sensor. QV's have three. Are the 328's the same?
Yes, I believe that is correct. A friend told me that these are the same ones used on the Lancia Thema 3.2, but I'm not sure. If you have a Lancia dealer at hand, maybe it's a good ideia to pay them a visit with your unit in hand
No, 328's have only two sensors: one for the crank position and another for flywheel teeth counting (angle)
Coils were fine. The crank sensor at the 11:00 position was shot. It is made of nylon or something and eventually they will crack, split, etc. That's what mine did. When I ordered my new ones from Rutlands, they told me they sell a lot.
I was in Atlanta when it first happened. Above 4000 rpm's or so it would run fine. I was able to drive back home without a problem - all highway, but eventually (after about a week ) it wouldn't run at all.
Try these guys. http://www.probedistributors.co.uk/detailspage.aspx?searchStr=PC6003 I just bought 2 new 308 GTSi coils (Page cited above) from them for LESS THAN HALF the price for O-N-E new coil from the cheapest "usual" F-Car supplier. They not identical but real close. They will not work for a concurs as you receive them BUT you can transpose one or two parts from old to new and no judge in the world would know the difference. I admit I do shop around. When prices are close (within 10-15%) I'll ALWAYS GO WITH an American supplier, but "darn" is all I can say on that mark-up. Sorry guys.
That is a fantastic tip, thanks !!! But I wonder ... for a 328, the most recent Marelli reference for the coil is AEI600C According to this site, the cross reference would be this one: http://www.probedistributors.co.uk/searchresultsbymanufacturer.aspx?txtManCode=AEI600C Did you buy the reference you've sent? Did it work on a 328?
Ok, forgot that it is a 308 GTSi, different coil from the 328 However, the picture shown for the 328 coil is not the same as the original unit. I'll ask them ... Thanks !!
Guys my luck is not good today... Gets a call regarding a new coil for a good price, picks it up today and straight home to fit... Turns the car over and bingo onto 8 cyls...... let her run for 10 mins and she sounds lovely... Takes her for a slow drive to the gas station.. (1 mile) Damn she drops back to 4 cyls? switched off and checked all connections, restart and bingo back onto 8 cyls... 1 mile later back to 4cyls... Now parked up for the eve as it is too late to keep starting.. Anyd ideas?
