I have a good friend that just moved to Minneapolis and is having a hard time finding this oil for his 430. Anyone in Minneapolis know where he can get this stuff? He has looked at the usual auto parts stores and target / walmart. I told him just to order a few cases of it but he is looking for some place that has it in stock.

    Thanks

Indy- Just going by and saw this. Walmart is the distributor for the Pennzoil Ultra, formerly Quaker State Q, and both rebadged Shell Helix Ultra.

I'm not sure I would use any of those in a car I paid money for.

Shell has a sponsorship agreement with Ferrari. If Ferrari is recommending their products I would follow the money.

    Marketing

Burger King claims their fries are better than McDonalds.

Pepsi and Coke each claim their product is better than the other.

Every oil company claims their product is superior.

Pennzoil and Quaker State have a "low quality" image that no amount of advertising will completely erase IMO.

Pennzoil Ultra claims to keep your engine clean, that's what regular oil changes are for.

Quaker State claims that nobody else is better, so what?

Having Ferrari endorse their products must have cost them plenty.

Tim- The Pennzoil Ultra just became the recommended oil for Ferraris here in the US and there have been ads with both a California and a 599, approved by Ferrari, to advertise that fact. It really is just Shell Ultra helix repackaged, because Shell's low end oils over here are Shell badged. That also explains why it was difficult to find Quaker State Q for a while. It was out of production while the rebadging was taking place.

I personally think the Shell/QS/Pennzoil oil foams too much, and use Valvoline synthetic 5W-40 in my car.

    What oil do you recommend?

Typically Mobil 1 (various grades) and Amsoil products where synthetics are called for.

Castrol 20w50 in the older cars.

Tim- I like the Mobil 1 European Blend, but there have been some questions on the run of the mill Mobil 1 over the last few years. Never seemed to hurt my Z06s, though, and that was really lightweight stuff in the C6s.

We run Total/Elf synthetics in all our cars, including the track car. Performance Oil Store (www.PerformanceOilStore.com) gives us great pricing.

Mark- Interesting. Note the Elf competition is a semi-synthetic and their synthetic is not available in a 5W-40 or 0W-40. Which one do you use? Or did I not go far enough back?

Found it. Total Quartz Energy 5W-40. Very good price and Elf makes very good lubricants. Would never have thought of that.

Just one quick question because I really don't know the answer. His car is a 2008 Model, still under factory warranty. Does Ferrari make a customer use a certain brand oil to comply with warranty? If he didn't, and had a big motor problem, would they check it and deny warranty claim?

    Thanks

As long as the oil used met the same specifications as the oil recommended in the owner's manual you would be okay.

I found that Top Gear Autoworks keeps a stockpile of it for their customers.

This is the same stuff that was required for the Ferrari Enzo at $80 a quart, I think it is fine!

I've switched to it after I found out it was Shell Helix.

exactly! I think it only lasted a couple years before prices came down and more widespread release, but it was REQUIRED for the Enzo and that's how much it was.

    It's not the same stuff

Enzo oil is 10W-60 and is still available.

    This is 430/8C oil.

So far as I know 10W-60 is recommended for 430 Challenge use.

We use 10W-60 in P 4/5 and Dino Competizione.

Our's is labled "Shell" and comes in 5 gallon pails. Not sure if it's more than weight but it held up for 4 hours of hard track use on the Bahrain F1 track on a 100+F degree day.

(Brake Pads did also but just)
