Sounds like a great way to get free advertising and nothing else. What do I need to do to make my company start the F1 rumor? At least my business is an engineering company already. =) In fact I can probably partner with some other engineering companies and call it US Engineering.

The only way an F1 team will EVER make it in the USA is if it is owned by a MULTI-Billionaire with a hard-core love for racing and a background in it and a total WILLINGNESS to LOSE several hundred million dollars.
And since that can be only one person (who tried it before and gave up), it's not gonna happen.

    EVER.

(unless a car manufacturer gets involved - and none will)

Sad but true as things stand now.
Personally I think F1 is due for a major shake-up. It isn't financially viable for neither teams nor promoters in the medium to long term.
The biggest obstacle is Bernie and his financial interests. Either he will bend to reality or we'll have to wait until he's forced aside. One way or another.

I think once Bernie croaks things will change. Only death will get the power and control out of his hands.

While a lot of the money he demands from race organizers goes back to the teams, there is a lot of extra cash going into his pockets, which are already full. That portion will go away.

Also whoever his successor is (Briatore?) will probably think more in terms what the car manufacturers and the fans want and hence allow lower prices for organizers and fans and come up even with a GP in the US.

One of Bernie's faults is that he actually believes F1 should be elitist and it enhances its image by separating fans and teams/drivers. To some degree that even works (akin to Ferrari only producing 5,000 cars a year when they could technically produce a lot more), but it does hurt the sport overall. I'm sure his successor will remove some of the barriers he put in place and NASCARize F1. There I said it!

I'm no NASCAR fan at all, but they do know how to please the fans and make a good show. F1 could learn a good deal from them. And if NASCAR sounds too dirty a word, then call it ALMS. Those guys too know how to bring the sport closer to the fans. It is not that F1 doesn't know that, Bernie just doesn't allow it.

Bernie has investors to answer to now and if the returns drop his freedom of action may be limited.
BTW Am I following you or are you following me? :)

I often read what you write since you know what you're talking about. Except for when it comes to MS' comeback. ;)

I meant in terms of cross posting on different threads, but thanks. You make more sense than many others quite often as well;)

BTW Doesn't "comeback" imply success? :)
Right now it qualifies as a return only.

Hmm, dunno. Comeback is one of those words used in German as well and there it has no implication of success. In fact I remember reading a F1 story last year where they were speculating about MS' comeback and listed all the failed comebacks from other WDCs.

Newsflash - nascar is a publicly traded company. Well, kinda, ISC is.

The problem is, because so many other countries' are subsidized into having an (overpriced) Grand Prix - because they are willing to pay THAT MUCH - F1 sees no reason to lower the cost.

If you owned a business and could cut the prices of the stuff you sell in half, would you? No, you would not. Unless you had competition, and F1 has no competition OUTSIDE of the USA.

A publicly traded company has a large investor base. Bernie has a small number of "partners" he has to answer to. His accountability is more direct and immediate.
F1 competes with the huge number of choices the fan has to spend his time and money on. Not just other motorsports.
The world economic situation makes it unwise to depend on nation-states for finance over the long term. At the best of times its unsustainable. Once an emerging country has held a GP, lost a ton of money and made yourself known worldwide, there is reason to continue.

exactly -- it's a stupid abbreviation. so it must be a very inside reference to fiberglass or maybe composites in general. someone probably thinks they are being witty since it is also an abbreviation for group.
