Small chip in windshield, fix yourself?

    My cargo van got hit with a rock. Now has a small chip in the windshield. The chip is tiny, about 1mm, but it is starting to spider up and down about another 1-2mm.

    I see kits to fix windshield cracks at the autoparts store, is it worth trying?

    What do the proffesionals charge?

    It shouldn't be more than 75-100 bucks tops.

    But if it is spidering out, I'm not sure anything can be done anymore. IIRC it's all about catching it before it spiders out.

    I would use a professional like Safelite. About $100 and they come to you. They just have better equipment and do it all the time, so not sure worth efforts.

    I got one fixed at a local glass company for $35 this week.

    Check with your insurer, they often cover those repairs for free to prevent buying you a windshield in the near future. Heck, here around Detroit, these guys set up with vans in parking lots with big signs "Free windshield repair" and it's legit!

    I remember I tried to do it myself on my 928S, when I pressed too hard the window split all the way up and down, I suddenly felt funny all over.

    So, no, I don't recommend doing it yourself.
