I noticed recently that the rear quarter light engine air intakes on a couple of 5.2 355's simply act as feeds to the engine bay because the flexi-hose is attached below the opening. Whereas on a group of 2.7 cars I saw the intakes feed air into the airbox's as the flexi-hose is connected as you would expect on the back of the vent.

Was just wondering if this was a 5.2 / 2.7 difference or a market (climate) difference? and why you think they are like this?

I figure its either to get more cooling air into the engine bay, something to do with emissions or that the 5.2 dosn't like +ve pressure airbox's!?

You can easily check by sticking your hand in the vent hole and feeling for the flexi-hose...

    Any ideas?

If you have a 5.2 ECU car and if you want to have 15 - 20 +hp then
remove the air intake upwards behind the small window ( like the 2.7 car and
the challenge cars have ) and install a GruppeM air ram system.
You will hear the suck in noises and have a better throttle response.
They changed it because of the noise and emission rules.

I noticed the same thing. On my car one of the upper intakes feeds one air filter while the other filter is fed via the intake near the door handle. Can't remember which is which.

You only have to produce an adaptor so that the air tubes can
    be fixed.
    It is worth doing.
After laying the tubes upwards you have similar suck in noises like
the 360 and you get some hp back from Ferrari's detuning.

So, if a 2.7 is like this - with the screw at the bottom of the pipe which I presume screws into the bottom of the vent. Then surely the 5.2 has the same setup BUT the screw is at the top of the pipe and still screws into the bottom of the vent.

If thats the case can you swap the pipes over (left to right) so everything then lines up?

Hmmm x2 ... just had a "grope" around the engine bay and it appears the flexi-pipes travel under the quarter light vent holes and continue forwards someways. No-way they just "move up" into position. Also, looks like the vent holes are not circular but more of a semi-circle to allow the pipe to pass below them. Cant find anything inside the radiator intakes (doors) but I guess the pipes take their air from that direction.

Has anyone actually performed the surgery to attach the 5.2 engines airbox's to the quarter light vent holes? ... looks (or feels) like a pain to me?

Now I would hazard a guess that the flexi's on my 5.2 end up on this little critter (see diagram) and hence the airbox's get fed from the top section of the door vents. Which means the pipe is way to long to just re-connect. Dont fancy chopping it either ... (£322.90)

There appear to be 3 types of flexi

If you want to change the 5.2 to the 2.7 upper air intake system
you first have to produce an round adaptor. 5.2 cars ( only Berlinetta and GTS ) have behind the small window flattened not round air intakes.
You first have to go to an mechanic to produce an adaptor and then
    shorten your tubes.
The other way is to order the modified air intake system from IMOLA RACING.
The system includes 2 adators and 2 motorsports tubes ( costs: 260 EURO ).

And can we ask Andi is there anything we can do to improve the air intake on a 5.2 spyder?!!!

    Hi guys,

Since we are on this topic, has anyone here used the Imola mods on their 355, ranging from the air intake, ECU etc? The 355 could do with a mid-life upgrade especially to the low-mid end torque. After all, she is one of the prettiest cars around and I'm sure that engine has a little more to give.

So if anyone has done any of these mods to their car, some feedback would be great. Thanks.

One can see big (8%-10%-ish) gains in the mid-range by using a 4-2-1 header system instead of the 4-1 header system. The trick, here, is to get the lengths and diameters correct so that one does not sacrifice anything on the top end for the gain in the mid-range. We have see a 20HP gain in the 4K-5K range with such a header in a challenge car (with no loss at the top end.)

Are there any photos of this? I could not find any and did not see any price of 260 Euros (perhaps you requested the price quote from them??)

    Did you do this modification?

I did this mod, I have a thread in the 355 section that I'll post a link to if I can find it. Very worthwhile!

I remember the thread and definitely want to go that route. Just wanted to see (photos) of any ready-made pieces that are out there/for sale.
