I think for the most part people agree that the Murcielago looks more aggressive with the air intake vents (bat wings) in the open position. When driving around town would these be open or does it require hard track style driving on the open road?

You can open/raise them with a switch in the cockpit.

They are temperature controlled. Mine seem to raise when it's about 81 degrees outside. They will remain open as long as the engine needs additional cooling. There is a "trick" to fool the computer to make them stay up, I don't recommend this as it also affects the rear spoiler and then you have to trick the computer to get them to go back down.

Plus, when they are up and the car is parked, if someone accidentally leans on the wing, it could bend the actuator rod which will in turn cause it to over-extend the next time it functions, this will snap one or more of the hinges for the wing and the repair is quite expensive.

It's best to leave that part of the cars funxtionality alone and let it perform as it is designed to.

Victor is right, you can press a button in the cockpit while stopped and they will come up, but if the need for them to be up is not there, once you hit 5-7 mph they go back down automatically.

As with many of Lamborghini's sensors, they work randomly. :) Was out last weekend for a drive with a friend, my '03 6-speed raised its wings at one long light after driving for about 45 minutes while my friend's '04 e-gear had them up for most of the drive.

    OK, thanks guys.

Curious is all. I for one like the appearance of them open but I'm not liking the idea of taking the control away from the computer.

How do you trick them on and off?

With them raised, turn off the battery cut off switch; now they'll stay up permanently.

If you want to lower them, cycle your key 3 times, on the 3rd cycle hold down the Wing Button. Hold the botton down until the wings have completely retracted.

The lowering option does not work for everyone, so it may require a dealer visit to do it via computer instead.

I've noticed with my car that if they go up a few times on a trip, they then tend to stay up until the car is turned off.

Thank you very much I'll try that, does that also trip the rear wing also?

I've heard differing reports on that; some have said the rear wing no longer comes up, others say it gets stuck up, still others say it works normally.

Some of the Murcs bat wings go down at 5-7 MPH, then back up at temp, up to 85 MPH, then back down, regardless of temp. In my case on both the LP640R and on the SV, the wings can be raised up to about 35 MPH before they close on their own, unless it's warmer than 80 degrees, or the engine bay is warm by itself. There is no movable rear wing on the SV, but mine was working fine.

The engine does get more air with the wings manually up (manually meaning button push) so many of us are in the habit of hitting the up button when we start our cars, just as I always raise the nose so I don't forget.
