With the quality of fakes getting better all the time and extending into packaging, serial numbers, etc, how can you tell if the watches sold by say a proworth on ebay are genuine. For instance Porsche Design p6000 chrono going regularly for $13-1700. Martin Braun Dakar $1300. And there are several other places like that with good user ratings, etc
    Any insights??

Proworth is a real company and will sell you a real watch. Don't worry about them.

As far as fakes and buying on Ebay - I would not casually buy watches on Ebay these days. Unless you KNOW the watch and know it well and have a nose for detecting scam sellers you should stick to sellers like Proworth, Astor etc.

I have purchased at least 2 from Proworth over the years (Tag for the Mrs and a DJR Chronoscope as a daily beater for vacation).

but...you make a great point. i am sad to see that the fakes even offer real working chronos, 316 or better ss, quality straps, nice sets of fake ss #'s, and nice quality boxes and papers.

i will NEVER own a fake watch but will hope to own a proper ferrari 512 s or m race car recreation! my bad double standard...lol

Funny, I feel the same way about fakes. Could be the physical experience of a well-done car is closer to the real thing and completely unavailable, while the watch is, well you could buy the watch if you really wanted to. Or maybe it's too close to the skin.

I'm the total opposite. I have replica watches, but wouldn't be caught dead buying a replica Ferrari. As for being able to buy the watch if you really wanted to...well some of them cost well into the 6 figure range, not really that attainable.
