Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will be the envy of the pit lane in Monaco this weekend and not just because they are driving two of the fastest cars.

As is customary at this time of the year at one of sport's most glamorous occasions, Steinmetz diamond specialists have again joined forces with McLaren to show off their spectacular jewels.

In previous years at Monaco, McLaren's drivers have had their initials encrusted onto their helmets with diamonds, but Steinmetz have opted for a more hands on approach for the 2010 showpiece event.

For this year's grand prix weekend, and to celebrate the drivers recent victories in Monaco in 2008 and 2009, Hamilton will have the number '08' and Button '09' in diamonds on their steering wheels.

"They look absolutely incredible and add a real bit of bling to the cars," said Hamilton. "I won in 2008 wearing a Steinmetz diamond-studded helmet, so I'm hoping it will bring me luck again this year."

Button, who is aiming to become Britain's first back-to-back Monaco winner since Graham Hill, was equally impressed by Steinmetz's latest offering.

"Monaco is one of the most prestigious and important races on the calendar, a race I feel honoured to have won," said Button. "To be racing for McLaren with a diamond-crested steering wheel, created especially for me, is a great honour."

    Talk about cost cutting :p

    Hmmm

Was it Montoya? Or Kimi? Who had some big honking diamond on the front of the car - only to crash and lose the nose - diamond and all?

Supposedly it was never found. That was a fun little bit of F1-dom. I can't wait to see the steering wheels.

We should take bets on how many times that cretin Varsha mentions it. I bet it will be at least 10 times over the course of practice/quali/race.

Yeah, that's what I said, Klein in the Jag :D

It all seemed a bit... contrived.

I don't think they would plan the crash (gawd knows *that* would never happen in F1) - but a $250k roll of the dice? Or was that what they insured the hunk of cubic zirconia for?

It looked staged. Like he had a deal with that corner worker to steal the diamond. There was a much worse crash that race when Sato blew an engine and a Sauber came crashing into him because he couldn't see due to all the smoke.

    Really? Because of advertising?

Advertising is what allows them to pay big salaries and hire the best drivers, and spend so much money on technology to make the series so technically competitive.

I say this is everything that is right about F1.

I think you guys are allowing all the bollocks surrounding the racing and required to wine and dine the sponsors to cloud your view of what should be important.

In the end all this bollocks is actually taking over the racing and soon somebody will realise that the racing is not actually required ...

As I've said for many years sponsorship will eventually kill motorsport. If you took away all the fancy dinners, fancy motorhomes and parties so you can chat with your sponsors you would find that the racing does not cost that much. Every year the dollars invested in this wining and dining is going up and THAT is where F1 has become crazy expensize and THAT is why we have the stupid single engine rules, etc. ... to save money so it can be spent on looking after sponsors instead.

Thus we can logically imply that sponsorship has killed innovation in motorsport because the money is being spent on food, pretty girls, bands, motorhomes and other red carpet BS.

Sponsors use the race so they can impress other companies ... but the cost is the race team now needs to hire a team of people to look after these needs. Its gone way too far.
    Pete
BTW: Motorsport would happily exist without sponsorship because car manufacturers would still exist to prove their points and it would be funded as a tax write off, like Toyota was. A F1 team running costs is small fry to a company like Toyota, Renault, etc.

Well Monaco is where many of the sponsorship deals are made. It's a circus. Anything goes. My avatar is proof of that.

Nothing says Monaco like pasting diamonds on to a race car.
Monte Carlo, where you have to scrape off the bling and wipe off the glitz to get to the real tinsel:)

McLaren Plays Down Pat Fry's Exit

    By Jonathan Noble
    Friday, May 14th 2010, 10:12 GMT

McLaren is confident that its form will not be hit too much by the departure of chief engineer Pat Fry.

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh confirmed that Fry, who originally joined McLaren in 1993, was leaving the Woking-based operation but said he reckons there was enough strength in depth at the outfit to overcome his loss.

"Pat's been with the company for about 18 years, so he's made a great contribution to the team over a number of years," said Whitmarsh.

"I think it was probably good for him, the right decision for him to take a bit of a break, take a breather. I think he's worked very hard for the team for a number of years.

"Within our team, then, I think we've got quite a bit of a talent and depth, so in these situations it's a great opportunity for someone younger, maybe hungrier, to come along and replace all of us. We're all replaceable. I think the process will be the same but we're manned with fresh new engineers."

Making way for a Newey return in a very high position? I haven't read that speculation anywhere but it sure would make things interesting around the paddock.
