I'm sorry but I need to vent. My car only came with one physical key, so I scanned eBay to find a pristine, uncut, 360 key blank so I'd have a spare if not a nice looking key to use every day (the one that came with the car showed some wear in the silver enamel). Turns out the key blank was being sold by forum member VTC. Great guy. Got it quickly in perfect condition and all was good.

I took the key blank to a local locksmith. Checked ahead and they assured me it would be no trouble to cut this key. Very ordinary despite the cost. Checked on Yelp. 4.5 stars, good reputation.

So I tell them to be extra careful, as this is a one-of-a-kind key, not replaceable. They said no problem. As you know, the key is symmetrical. Same cut pattern on both sides so it doesn't matter which way you insert it. The guy does the first cut. All is good. Then (and I didn't see him do this or else I'd have screamed) instead of flipping the key around its axis (rotating it) to do the other side, he REVERSES the key end-to-end and cuts it BACKWARDS! As a result, the cuts on the second side are nowhere near close to fitting. The key is ruined!

He offers to go in for half the cost of a replacement. I explain (as I did beforehand) it was not replaceable as Ferrari no longer sells key blanks for this car. Not to mention how it cost me $190. During that conversation he twice referred to my "Porsche" and could not understand how such a new car could not have key blanks available. He asked me to get him the key blank number so he can get me a new one.

I'm not yet going to give up, and not yet ready to recite the name of his shop or trash him on Yelp. But what is it about my luck with this obvious moron? I'm sure if I took the key to Home Depot they'd have done a better job!

The funny thing is, in the back of my mind that still, small voice kept telling me not to go to this shop. I had trouble finding it while driving in the neighborhood. I got out of the car and walked at first in the wrong direction. But did I listen to any of these cues? Nope!

Thanks for letting me vent. It's been a tough day. At least he didn't trash my one and only working key in the machine. Nor was the car itself damaged. I'm thankful for small miracles today. You know how they suggest that when things are going your way you should buy a lottery ticket? What is the opposite of that? That's how this feels.

Wow... What a bummer. How could he reason the he should only be responsible for half the cost?? WTF?

Also, I did not realize that these key blanks were no longer made.

I had a key made by a small shop down the block for my Dino 246, just too lazy to drive to a bigger shop. thought if it doesn't work I can just throw it away. I walked back to my car and try to start the engine, it won't turn, so I tried to pull it out, but I couldn't. It got stuck! The locksmith came to help, he yank so hard it finally broke into half and left me in panic. the key assembly could cost thousands $$, if I could find one! the mechanic came to disassemble the lock, took it to a master locksmith, luckily he got it out.

    WTF! What a moron!
Something similar happened to me but with a wheel. I was so mad I invite the guy outside to fix our thing like old days. He said; that I was a "material person" since I own a Ferrari I though I'm better person that him. Do you beleive that crap. I told him that next time I will be back on a Toyota and still kickIng his ass.

N4S- The good news is ugly blanks are available for little money. $12 from Ricambi, even less from other sources (do a search). The bad news is the keys with the little chrome horses are really hard to find. If your is one of the cast ones with the cavallino emblem, also hard to find. There is a really pretty carbon fiber key that will work. If the shop offered to pay half, one of those is an option. http://www.ferraricarbon.com/

I had an extra blank (rubber with little chrome cavallino) provided to me by Boardwalk when I bought my car. Steel blank, so very hard to cut, and rough on locksmiths' tooling. I made a deal with a locksmith for $100 to cut it. Needless to say, he was very, very careful and it works perfectly.

Well there is another guy in here that I found while I was searching that had the uncut keys and he was gracious enough to sell me one. I can PM him and see if he wants to sell another one if he still has one. I just saw a picture he posted that had like 5 or 6 uncut enzo keys.

And I purchased a cut key from ebay and got a blank from a member here and made my own key. PAP posted a DIY post. Easy and fast.

    Sorry to hear

    Good luck

Personally if I was that concerned going in I would have watched him like a hawk the whole time. Easier said then done. This guy should pick up the tab for another key instead of split it. That'll probably be a stretch since it was crazy pricey to begin with. Good luck.

    Bum deal...
Doesn't seem too complicated though-locksmith damaged, he is liable for the full replacement. Simple. Give him the receipt, tell him to replace or reimburse you the whole amount. Do not accept half the amount, you didn't damage half of it.

Think about it this way: I'm sure he was charging you more to cut the Ferrari key than if you were cutting a simple house key. So with the rewards go the risks.

I think he owes you the full price.
He accepted the job and ruined the key.
If he ruined the key for your home's front door, he'd pull another blank off the wall (eating the cost) and cut you a new key.
    Same concept, slightly different cost...

I just got an Enzo key and a Carbon key cut yesterday at a local locksmith. The guy has been in the business for 20 something years. Took him 2 minutes, cost me $4 (for both) and both work perfectly. The funny thing is I went to a couple of other places before I found this guy and nobody wanted to even try cutting them. I have a spare Enzo key (with a blank blade) if anyone's looking to buy one.

I thought I'd post an update on how this all turned out. First, when I called the original locksmith back to try and work something out, he never returned my call. So much for his offer to pay half for a replacement key. No doubt it finally dawned on him how much original 360 key blanks cost and how unobtainable they are anymore.

So, Plan B was that I would get a reproduction key from Rizzo308 and get it cut by a competent locksmith this time. Within 7 days of payment, the key blank was at my doorstep, all the way from Australia. It arrived in perfect condition and looks great.

I finally had a chance to get it cut today. I explained to locksmith #2 what happened with locksmith #1. One look at the butchered blank and all he could say was something like, "what a moron." Locksmith #2 was extremely careful with the repro key and cut it perfectly, as it fits and works fine.

I also got him to cut me a plain spare out of an FT46 blank (used for Fiats). He was a bit concerned whether it would fit the lock because the grooves didn't line up exactly with the OEM Ferrari key, but it was only $4 including the cutting so we didn't sweat it. I tested that one, too, when I got home, and it also works perfectly.

Locksmith #2 also suggested to me that it was likely that the lock on my car only has pins/tumblers on one side, not both, so if the butchered key was cut properly on one side, it still might work, but only if inserted in one orientation and not the other. Brilliant suggestion. I tried it and yes indeed, it does work in one orientation but not the other. So I guess I got my "half" replacement after all and had it all the time!

    Nice Story...
the thing is that i am in the same shoes!
I got my car with 2 remotes and 2 keys from a private seller 2 years ago. I did not know it should have the red FOB with the 2 sets.
For some reason, 3 months ago, i lost one set and cannot find it . So now i have only one key and one remote which is a very scary situation.
My question may not be that smart but, how do you benefit from a spare key without a spare remote, since the car automatically sets its alarm on after few minutes? Do you have one remote or more?

You are correct that the spare key is only part of the solution. The reason to have a spare key is that if you lose your one and only key and remote, and you can't get the PIN, you not only need a new alarm ECU and set of new fobs but a new lock and set of keys, too. If you have a spare key, at least you can avoid getting a new lock.

I only have one remote, too, so I'm working on getting another set of fobs because, like you, my situation is a bit scary. But first I need the PIN from Maranello. Taz has posted a doc with everything you need to know about keys, fobs and PINs. It still amazes me how careless the original owners are with their keys and PINs, and how dealers or other sellers can take in cars to sell without them. At least it's not quite as bad as losing your radio code where, one disconnect of the battery and your radio is useless (although there are services that can get the codes or reset the radios). Having only one key and fob is not a problem unless you lose them or the fob fails.
