I have a leak from what seems to be the gearbox driveshaft oil seals.

Has anyone changed the seals item 18 and 22 and if so does anyone have tips for the replacement?

    Thanks.

I have changed them in my 348. It's not that big a deal. Though I did change mine when I had the gear box out of the car (you can remove it in about 4 hours). However, I think you could change them in stu, but you won't have much room to work with. #22 is just a big o-ring that fits into a groove on the diff bearing cup. #18 is a seal that gets pressed out/in, not a hard job to change the with the trans out of the car.

I would suggest pulling the gear box, and then changing them. The reason is that the bearings on the inside of the cover support the weight of the differential. So when you remove the cups there isn't anything to hold the diff in place. It'll be easier to put them back in as you will be able to hold up the diff while you are putting the cups back in.

Either doing it in stu, or pulling the gear box, your are going to need to get the half shafts out of the way, which mean you are going to have to disconnect the CV joints. There is a bolt that holds the inner axle flange to the diff, and it must be removed. You must pull out the axle flanges to change #18, and you also need the flanges out of the way to pull the diff cover to change #22.

If you are gonna pull the tranny here are the how-to instructions. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124766 They are for a 348 but it's pretty much the same for a 355. The only real difference is that you don't have the support bolt on the top. You will need to disconnect the two support brackets on either side of the back of the tranny. But other than that it's pretty much the same deal.

    Happy wrenching. :D

Nice work Terry, thanks for the pics. Be sure to clean up that washer good. Looks like you have a bit of rust on it.

    Thanks gents.

Just a few more pics to finish the story.

After cleaning everything, I assembled the new o ring and shaft seal with vaseline and primed the bearing surfaces with gearbox oil. The re-assembly was fine.

The last pic shows the left side and it looks like its been leaking for a while. I have installed new seals now like the right side.

Not meaning to resurrect a thread from the dead,
but I noticed a driveshaft oil seal leaking on my 355 while changing another CV boot (an aero boot even!).

I see the job is very straightforward, but my main question:
Can this be done with the transaxle in the car? Or am I risking some transaxle or bearing damage attempting so?

    Many thanks,

    pino

    E,

You can do it with gearbox in the car no problem. It is easier doing 1 side at a time.
