Anyone using MOBIL 0-40?

I used 0W40 in my car with no issues. The 0 just means it flows even better that 5W when the oil is cold. As our systems are high flow the 0 wt. oil can't hurt and my help in colder climates.

 

I use Mobile 1 15w-50 for 3 years. You can buy 2 five quart containers at Walmart for $54.00

 

The 0 in 0W-x0 oil means that the base stock is a 0 weight oil. This leads to issues with HTHS numbers being insufficient for track use (4.0 cP and above needed). That thin base oil is then thickened by adding Viscosity Index Improvers. VIIs can shear under high RPM and high load use, allowing the xW-40 weight oil to slip (i.e. thin) out of grade.

I prefer the 5W-40 and 10W-40 oils {especially RedLine for its uniquely high HTHS numbers compared to its operating viscosity numbers--its an ester based oil (group V) with some PAO rather than a PAO based oil (group IV) with some ester.}

For road use and even agressive back road use, it maters little. For track use HTHS numbers separate oils that allow the engine to survive from those that do not.

 

Mitch- I thought we had this discussion before. The first letter would denote the weight oil modified with viscosity improvers in dinosaur oils, but in synthetics it is the flow characteristics when cold and the base oil is the second number.

I just put it in mi car. Now, I'm second guessing...

 

Used it in six Corvettes, a Porsche and a Mercedes. You guys will be ok.

The right viscosity for the engine oil of the 348 is 10W40 but Mobil1 decided no to make it anymore, in fact you can only purchase it for high miles engines, which I would not advice.
Get Redline 10W40 instead and you will be perfectly aligned with the manufacture's specs. But this is just my opinion and I could be wrong ...

 

I remember those threads about one guy who blew two Ferrari's because of 0W-40...sounded very fishy to me.

I ran 0W-40 last year in the 355, and in my subjective opinion it was just fine. But in reality we have no way to tell if there was a teeny bit more or less wear over one year attributed to an oil grade. Also that was Mobil 1, which people have their opinions on. I've always loved it and thought it was great...until I did more reading about ZDDP...

So this change I went with Redline 10W-30 for more ZDDP and closer to factory recommendations for weight (I don't track it, but do see 8500 on occasion)

 

What about Royal Purple...that's what I run in my 99 seems to fair very well between changes

 

Don't trust Royal Purple since it came out that their oil did not live up to its advetising.

You have to take even the auto manufacturer's recommendation with a grain of salt in recent years IMO -- I believe that better EPA MPG test results and lower emissions are now given more priority than engine life (hence the trend to lower viscosities).

 

I agree. A very reputable individual on FChat here asked for the technical data on their oil and Royal Purple would not provide it.

That means stay away from it, IMO.

 

I was prepared since the first minute to use Mobil 1 on my 348. The reputation was imaculate....

But the problems started with the rarity of it nowadays on the market... Then the 0w was far away from the manufacturer requested 10w... so I started to look elsewere...

Shell was the next candidate, even more beeing the official supplier for some years now...

The suprise came when I found some Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 at "Norauto" supermarket, with API SM specification, Ferrari aproval and extremely competitive price!

The advertised HTHS is 3,68

It's not far from the requested 10w40 and it's the one used today by Ferrari dealerships on non-hydraulic lifters engines.
