He was offered $35 million for a 275 NART? Should have taken it--he could have then bought another one and had enough money left over for a dozen Enzos, a 599 GTO, an F-50, an F-40, a 288 GTO and a host of other Ferraris. As for the show, one in particular stands out. "Bushido" with Dean Sockwell. Very well written. As for the Daytona, I thought they blew it up.
This 275 has incredible history, I believe won LeMans. Worth as much as any original GTO. Besides, the owner has an Enzo, 16mm, FXX, BBi, 599, and probably another 20 Ferraris. He is one of Ferrari's elite, whatever new is introduced, he will have one of the first ones. As for the Daytona, when I was on set for MV, I asked, and was told that the black Daytona was one of the Corvette chassis replicas. They had 2-3 of them, not sure if any of the them were destroyed. The Testa Rossa, now owned by Preston Henn, is a real Ferrari.
I did take prints photos that day, they are somewhere in storage, when I find them, will convert. I also need to find the VHS of the commercial. BTW, I was paid $1750 per day for two days use of the car.
Preston was offered a million for the white TR and turned it down...apparently it is in pretty rough/abused shape.
Are you sure that car won LeMans. I can't find it. Even if it were worth an original GTO with a pedigree, no GTO to my knowledge has traded over $30 million US. Not saying it didn't happen, but I can't find any evidence of it. Assuming it is more "reasonably" priced at $20 million--which is astronomical, you could still buy all the other cars in my list. The 275 is a great car, but I find it hard to believe a guy turned down $35 million for that car--even if it is owned by Henn, who has had his issues lately. In fact his "issues" suggest that the $35 million claim can't be trusted.
The impact this show had is almost immeasurable. I was attending a stuffy private school in New England when it hit. The uniform was shoes, ties and jackets and our wardrobes just about changed over night. We still adhered to the clothing guidelines but let me tell you, it was not easy or comfortable emulating the Miami Vice style in 20 degree winter weather.
It won the GT class at LeMans in 1965, bought in 1988 for $10, I would believe the $35 mill figure is within $5 mill of reality. When you already have all of the cars on your list, and you can still afford to add more, why sell an important part of Ferrari raiing history? For me, I would rather have this car, than all of the cars on your list. Its a great list, but this GTB sings Le Mans when it is standing still. Photo I took of the car at The Cavallino. Some information: Only three examples of the Speciale were produced. After these cars, 22 subsequent competition GTBs were made to more outwardly reflect the production version. These cars were very successful, taking many class victories and adapting refinements first used with the Speciales. Chassis 06885GT - This was the first official Competition GTB and the most prolific. After brief stints at the Nurburgring and Targa Florio where it raced as a prototype, it was painted yellow as raced by Ecurie Francorchamps drivers Mairesse and Blaton. After being homologated, they raced the car at 1965 Le Mans and placed first in the GT class, gaining the first 275 GTB victory. This was followed up by an outright win for Charlie Kolb at Nassau. In 1988 the car was sold to Preston Henn for a rumored 10 million. He has since shown it several times in throughout America and it was one of the highlight cars at both the 40th anniversary reunion and the 2004 Ferrari FCA meet in Monterey. http://www.ferrari-275gtb.com/palmares%20de%20la%2006885%20eng.htm Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you for that research. Very good and very intersting. What is also interesting to me is that he purchased the car in 1988. At the time, $10 million would have been an incredible sum. I remember that Tom Monaghan had a GTO, I think, and bought it for about $10 million. I think he also had a Bugatti Royale worth about 9 or 10 million.
the porsche behind looks like the one from risky business and the lotus in front looks like the one from pretty woman. are they?
Dear Ferraristi, OOOOOHHHH! You should be banned from the TR forum for a while for that! If you see a red TR or more likely a Blue Diablo VT Roadster coming up fast on your butt....you'll know why!! The show was an era....we all lived and breathed Miami Vice for half a decade. Now...that's very cool. Soo...why did you drive a lowly bbi instead of a Testarossa....the Vice machine! Shamile Freeze.....Miami Vice !
If you knew Ferraris, you would never have suggested the BB is lowly. It is the premier supercar, the first, the Miura was beautiful, but it is still a lowly Lamborghini, an ungrade of a farm tractor. Sorry, but Lambos are only for people that need attention, not for those that appreciate art. I met Sergio Pininfarina in Pebble Beach, the weekend that Mr Glickenhaus so graciouly allowed me to be at the unveiling of P 4/5. I asked Mr P what he considered their favorite design, without letting on to the Ferrari I owned at the time. He stated, not including the P 4/5, the Boxer. Since I was a young child, the BB was my favorite car, favorite Ferrari. That is why when I had a chance to buy a BBi, I jumped on it. I would do it all over again in a heart beat, despite my experience with the car. For me, it is the perfect design of all Ferrari street cars, the P 3/4 and the 250 LM leading in the race car category. The P 4/5 the combination of all of the above. Not much of a TR fan, I do not like the width, nor the cheesecutter grates on side. Unless of course, you offered me the one and only Slutmobile. Now that is a TR to respect. But I would also own a Miura if I had the $$, it is the epitomy of Lambos. Beautiful car. After that, just not my thing.
I remember when the show went into syndication on USA, they gave away a white TR. You would qualify to get a key to start the car, if it started it was yours. Some lady won, and she took the cash prize instead. I wanted to win that contest so bad.
Dear Ferraristi, Oh come on....a bbi is a glorified 308....no?.....it sure looks like it I love Lamborghinis because it IS art....and you get to drive it too. A car reflects the driver's personality. I'm just an out there kinda guy and that car suits my personality. The fact that I pick up young chicks with the car....oh well... Funny, I love the TR because of the width...and my Diablo is even wider and lower! I'm glad you bought your childhood dream.....I did too! I remember seeing a TR for the first time....my jaw went to the floor with that wide rear with 4 exhaust pipes sticking out at you. All those vents with the engine peaking through and those huge intakes....wow! I still remember how I felt... Even though I'm really a Diablo guy first, everytime I read the name "Testarossa" on the back of my car, it takes me right back to when I saw the car for the first time and how I felt.....all giddy. It's still the most extravagant, over the top Ferrari ever built.....and I absolutely love it! Shamile Freeze...Miami Vice!
Seems I recall Mr. P. giving a different 'favorite car design' in some magazine article many years ago. Don't recall which model offhand, but I don't think was a Boxer of any kind. Could be he had many 'most favorite design' answers, depending upon when or whom asked.
Partly due to this thread, I picked up the entire Miami Vice series on DVD recently. Buy.com had it for $39.99 and no shipping, how can you argue with that? I don't know if I'll ever find time in my entire life to watch all of them, but I'm having fun working on it. I never saw all of them as a kid either, so these will be fresh discoveries. The early seasons definitely hold up quite well and it's fun seeing '80s celebs like Phil Collins, Ted Nugent and Al Bundy making guest appearances. If you enjoy the whole '80s Miami cop thing, check out the underrated '86 movie Manhunter. Some of the scenery and styling was without a doubt influenced by MV, but it's actually the original story of Hanibal Lector. An inferior (IMHO) redo was made many years later and called Red Dragon.
