I have a newly acquired 348TS that has a speedo issue. Well frankly, it does not work, and of course the odometer is not working either, but, for some strange reason I noticed the trip meter racked up a few miles during a little run after I had set it back to zero. I am not certain why this sort of works and nothing else does. Any thoughts from the Pony gurus out there?

The speedometer and the odometer on the 348 are electronically driven, there is no mechanical cable at all. The sending unit is mounted on the transaxle case, next to the inner end of the left axle. You can check to make sure its wire connector is solidly plugged in (just in case the PO of your car was leaving it detached in order not to rack up any miles), and you check to see that the twist connector near the top of the left rear shock absorber is tightly attached, but chances are that the sending unit has gone bad. It's pretty common for the sender to go out, more common than problems inside the speedo head itself.

Where would one acquire said sending unit?

Since your new we'll let that slide;)...Ricambi, Ricambi, Ricambi.

See Daniel AKA Jack Russell Racing here at this site. I expect he'll be chiming in soon but don't wait.

Like Jeff said...check the connection. Mine has come apart twice. I'm not sure why. Seems like its snug

The sending unit is Ferrari part #116987, the copper washer is #10263460. You're welcome to shop around for the best price at present, but you're not likely to beat the service from Ricambi. They list the sender for $252, the washer for less than a buck.

+1, very likely the sender. Each Ferrari I have owned has had it replaced either by me, or just prior to my ownership. They are made by Veglia....an Italian term for "Pinto"... ;)

Very easy to replace, I did it myself on my 308 and 355.

It is also a Maserati part(check the inter-changeable parts thread). Heaps cheaper and works perfectly in my car.
