    Every since I put the QV replica wheels on my 308GTB I get a steering shake around 70mph. I figured I had something loose in the suspension but after rebuilding it & the steering the shake was still there. I put a dial indicator on the outside of the rim & found I have almost 30 thousands runout as I rotate the wheel, the high & low are exactly opposite across the wheel like the hub was machined wrong. Can this just be resurfaced?
    Anyone else have this problem or a solution?

    did you get the aluminum centering rings with the wheels?? there should be info on this topic already. i had the same problem with the wheels, the centering rings took care of it.

    Yes on the centering rings but they are plastic from Superformance in UK.

    Did you install them?


    I did just for the heck of it and have no issues from Zero up past 130mph.

    The runout is on the face of the rim(ie the rim moves left & right as viewed from drivers seat), I don't think the centering rings can cure this.

    This is why you dont by reproduction QV rims. This is why I sold mine right after I bought them, paid the piper and got real ones.

    sounds to me like you simply have a wheel out of balance. take them in and check

    .030" of run-out is a lot and certainly would contribute to your "shake". However, before I'd condemn the wheels, I'd check the run-out at the wheel bearing hub. This should be less than a couple of thousanths...

    If all measures true, short of replacing the wheels, a good machine shop should be able to true them. Another option would be to find a tire shop who has a Hunter "road force" type balancer. I've had great surceases with these machines.

    In deed. take a lot of measurements, and if the hubs/rotors are true and the bearings round and smooth, demount the tires, and have the interface of the wheels machined true. You cannot balance something that is not true.

    Or send the wheels back as defective.

    Maybe have some metal centering rings???

    I think '308GTB' had some made, they were better than plastic.......


    It could be your steering rack showing some wear???

    Still, if you are seeing it 'at the wheel'...it's the wheel!!!

    And the prize for figuring this out goes to BROOK308 tho it was from another thread that he mentioned checking the steering shaft & joints. The lowest knuckle/joint was loose. Why this only showed up with the QV wheels & not the original 14 inch donuts I have no clue!

    glad you found it, i have had 3 sets of those replica Qv wheels and not had any problems with them. i will definitely continue to use them.

    I have a set of Superformance replicas (with plastic centering rings) in my Mondial QV and no issues.

    No problems with the superformance replicas. Just for the heck of it I put a couple on my lathe and measured the run out with my dial indicator - got 1 thou on one and zero thou on the other. With that measured, I didn't bother with the rest!

    The originals are very nicely made and a couple pounds lighter, but at least with the repro 16s you know you've not dealing with 25 years of potholes and curb crashes....
