It's the girth that matters! http://www.cigarsinternational.com/prodDisp.asp?item=CS-MVB&cat=3 6.5"x60
Congrats and enjoy that cigar. Let us know how sick you get from it. Anything longer than a toro has my head and stomach spinning these days.
I haven't seen a legit "pre-embargo Cuban" since the mid 70's They were poorly rolled, short filler, and overly soft... They were also the most delicious cigar I had ever had in my life Seen a few advertised as such in the past few decades and I even wasted a few matches on some... Not even CLOSE to the real deal. I've had a few current Cubans wander my way via Argentina, Canada, and Kuwait over the past decade but time and Castro have taken their toll on many of the current offerings. They ain't what they used to be...
those pre-embargo things popped up a few years ago in my local shop. They weren't that good and the cost was higher than a lot of good real cubans or good non-cubans.
The only Rocky I like is the Old World but I have a feeling they changed it at some point. The taste seems more mellow now, like something is missing. I remember having a spicy/pepper bite to them before.
I tend to like rocky but they are so hit and miss and some of his lighters were such junk... I have trouble risking buying anything from him any more.
LOL! Not a bad idea... Agreed, even the A is a bit much! We'll see how I fare! If I do, I will post pics! Ok, I won't, but I'll let you know!
Absolutely agree about the current Cubans. I ordered a few for my wedding expecting what I had tasted years before, but was very unimpressed. I would have rather had some of my current favorites. George
Alright Gentlemen, I am just dipping my toe into the cigar-water... I have a few questions... -Where should I start on this journey? What cigars? What should I be looking for? -Where should I be looking for them? -Who/what/when/where/why should I smoke them? (I'm seeing a lot of celebrations and extravagant events as excuses, but I'm thinking maybe a sunset on the back porch overlooking the sound would be a good one too?) Thanks in advance all, Colin P.S. It's awesome that you guys have filled 92 pages on this... I've filtered through a lot of it, but still have a lot to learn.
Cant go wrong with just about any Fuente or La Gloria Cubana. Both for under $10 at a reputable shop. A good single malt only adds to the pleasure. Read the first say 5 pages of this thread and you should get a good drift of our tastes.
Try a few different kinds at the lower price points. Figure out whether you like a mild, medium, or full bodied cigar. Then move up the price spectrum so you can get a feel for the difference. George
Ditto's on that advice. Excellent and consistent names to start with to find your own palette. Once you find your favorites there you've got a better sense of direction for testing other waters. You'll discover a lot of tidbits along the way. Ring gauge and length influence the balance of flavors between the filler and wrappers substantially, even in the same brand.
My current three favorites. Trinidad 100th anniversary, Dunhill dominican, and Oliva Serie V! Image Unavailable, Please Login
