I totally agree with you. However, I am currently practicing "the improving over seat time" mindset for two reasons. One I'm chicken and don't want to get hurt. Two I have to fix myself what I break. Three then I have to pay for it. In SCCA we are non-contact. I have not been in a race yet where there has not been some by somebody. Maybe I am just too cautions I have never hit another car or got hit just punted once and wrecked.
Wow! what a great qualifying strategy. Thanks for sharing! I think I explore the track in practice but really in practice I'm just trying to get the rust off and the speed up. After reading your post I'm thinking my track exploration in practice really is not up to speed. I need more time for track exploration and you are right about qualy. Now that I think about it you are right very little is gained pushing past the 3/4 lap mark. It makes sense if I do more of a qualy speed and explore I would gain raceable knowledge. You absolutely nailed me. In my saturday race I was on the pole and closest competition qualified surprisingly poorly several positions back. He got around me early and later i got around him up until the last 2 laps when I late braked myself in a very very mildly off camber area I underestimated. That induced a spin which was enough for him to get by me and I finished second. If I tested that unlikely brake zone just like you are talking about I would have learned the problem and not made that mistake because the error would have happened in qualy. In fact stupid me saw the guy in front of me 2nd lap of practice do the exact same stupid thing I did and instead of realizing that the mild off camber would upset the car more than predicted I wrote off his incident as too fast an entry on "cold tires". Well I learned a lot from that bobble and will never make that mistake again. Nice trap from the course designers. Stupid me for not seeing it eventhough someone ahead of me was broadcasting my future with a big cloud of dust and grass. After the race I felt like an idiot. Now reading your post an even bigger idiot. The story was all laid out I just have bad reading comprehension. This is why the sport is so much fun. Super difficult game like Golf at 150mph!
