SPOT ON! I went through every record they had and saw the carfax (an older one) but didn't recognize any of the previous owners. The guy that is selling it called me an hour after I left wanting to know what I thought about it.

After I gave my answer based on it's actual condition and the deceptive description he gave me over the phone he said "I know I can save you a thousand bucks on it". Before I even posted this query I knew instantly the guy was trying to take me for a ride.

This is what I don't get. Why do these car sales people try old worn out, predictable tactics that are so grossly transparent in a feeble effort to sell a car. Now take that and add to it that this isn't an 80's Ford truck, it's a Ferrari and frankly I take it as an insult to my intelligence that anyone would try to be anything less than honest about a car like this.

Example: He told me he looked all over that car and the only rust he could find was that spot on the right duct. Then I show up and look at a car that has the whole bottom of the doors rotting off of it! This doesn't make me want to listen to another syllable from his mouth, let alone buy a car from him even at wholesale. Life is way too short to deal with folks like that.

Do these types think that people don't do research before contemplating the purchase of something like this? When I go to look at something to purchase and I get the spiel from the guy that assumes I'm stupid, it just pisses me off and I want nothing further to do with that salesman.

I have walked away many times and came back to a different guy on another day to make a deal as long as he was right in the head and didn't say anything stupid. If it were up to me; all and I mean ALL car salesmen would be taught the first lesson is to ASSUME that the customer knows what he's looking at because if you don't and try to slip something by them that's elementary, they'll leave.

It still irritates me to think about it and I would'nt take it for 10K now just for the satisfaction of not doing them the favor of taking it off their hands and ridding them of a problem. They can sell it to Rutlands and hope for the best.

Carfax is useful only in the mind of Carfax...a perfect example of a "company" who has convinced people that their "product" has any actual value. They are useless and no one should even bother paying for a Carfax report.

I don't get it... Doesn't carfax tell you if there's accident history, or OD irregularity, or a failed emissions test, or a lien??? If yes, I would think that's quite helpful information to most potential buyers of a f-car.

Im very pleased with how my 308 resto turned out as is the new owner - spoke with him yesterday in fact. But the fact of the matter is I could have bought two Testarossa's and had them sitting side by side in my garage for what I had invested in the purchase and restoration of one 308GTB.

I find it useful when it comes to telling me how many hands it's been through and which "title washing" states it's been in.

I looked at a BMW the other day on a used car lot and noticed paint work on the front end. I pulled the FREE complimentary Carfax from the Dealer and it showed the car had been wrecked TWICE in the last 5 years. How is that not useful?

I also like to know what part of the country the car has spent most of it's life in.
Normally you don't find west coast cars with extensive CANCER like the one in this thread. That isn't to say cars don't get rusty on the west coast but they don't ROT extensively like cars from the southeast.

The only flaw in that thought is you have opportunity cost in the 5 years it will take you to sell all of the parts. Cost of time over money and inflation as well. I would always take money for a car over parting it over years.... with no guarantees and massive storage costs...plus packing shipping time and labor

This guy's a real class act. I sent him a polite note asking if he was aware of all the rust documented in the first photos of this thread.

    Here's his response:

    Dear 85gto,

Let me tell you those are winnies idiots.
I will buy any ferrari I cross for 10 k. A group of dreamers discussing how much pay for others peole good f.... that

This sounds like the same guy that was selling the patched together Boxer that was totaled a couple of years ago.

I remember that car and that guy. Thanks to the "winnies idiots" (whatever that means) that Boxer was established for what it actually was on ebay. The guy listed it several times, with many folks calling him out on it, until the point where he (sort of) disclosed the true history of the car. I haven't seen it up on there recently, perhaps it finally sold. He seemed to have some buyers in the mid $40ks.

I think he meant "Whiny Idiots".

Yeah, what do OWNERS on a Ferrari forum know about Ferraris............................
Everybody knows that a used car salesman that doesn't normally deal in exotics would know far more.

It reminds me of the the white eBay 308 recently with a line in the description like, "runs fine, I just jumped in and drove down to the liquor store."

Today he sent me another message, in Spanish, saying "When I need your opinion, sir, I will ask you for it."

Hmmm. . . What I asked is why he didn't post any photographs of the "litte russt" on the lower doors; all of his eBay photos show only the top of the car.

This sort of fraudulent misrepresentation makes me sick.

If anyone else wants to contact him and let him know that the Ferrari community won't stand for this sort of nonsense, he's at [email protected]

That guy is a real piece of work.

For anyone searching info on the car in the future, I'm posting the VIN so they find this thread:

    ZFFAA01A8B0034703

    Ferrari 308 GTBi GTB 1981 34703

What a tool that guy is. Buy it now for $24k?!? How much do you want to bet that the $17k worth of bids are all shill bids from his buddies?

I hope anyone interested in that car finds this thread.

Yes, indeed. And he's rude, too. I don't know where he's from, or where he got his attitude, but I have worked with a very large number of Hispanic people from Mexico, and they're nearly all honest, humble and respectful - nearly to a fault.

I hope that helps. I really hate to see people scammed like this. I suppose that it could be argued that anyone who bids to purchase a car after seeing only eBay photos that have carefully hidden all flaws deserves what he gets. But I'd like to think that some people in this world are still honorable and trustworthy.

I hope you're right about the "shill" bidding. I bought my own (coincidentally silver) 308GTBi on eBay from a truly honest, straight-up guy - but only AFTER he allowed me to inspect it carefully in person, and drive it!

Well, as far as I'm concerned, my personal reputation and good name is worth a hell of a lot more than $24k. I guess as far as Juanito's concerned, his isn't.

    Agree,

22,5 is freaking comical...that car needs 20k worth of work just to get it in a drivable condition and another 20k to get it reasonable to drive to an event.

I bought a "driver" and it is going to take me 25k to get mine the way I want it and it is a TON better than this one.

    Run, fast.

Nazi damage aside, it's an AWSOME car!

Seriously, it's a great OPORTUNITY, aside from the RELESE BERRING and a LITTE RUSST.

I mean, that car is THIGHT. Seriously, it only needs a LITLLE work! I wish I had the FOUNDS to buy it! :D

Well, I'm willing to give the guy some room since English is not his first language.

But after I questioned him in Spanish about what he calls "light rust" (or maybe he meant "a little rust," he responded with (translated): "When I want your opinion, sir, I'll consult you."

Clearly the poor man has no idea or doesn't care what is considered acceptable in the Ferrari community. I pointed out that he's selling his reputation if he gets what he's asking for this vehicle, but he evidently doesn't care.

Fortunately in this case, eBay favors the buyer. When and if the sale is complete, the buyer can come back and argue his case that what he purchased is "substantially not as presented." I think that any reasonable arbiter will rule in favor of the buyer.

Of course, it's best in the end if the sale never takes place. Let's all do our part to spread the word regarding the true state of this car.
