It's good to see the Factory calling this car a 350 Can Am not at P4. Image Unavailable, Please Login
it is what it is, and its current configuration was done by the Factory, or at least NART, yes? leave it be.
+1 By the Factory. What you don't think it would be better as a P4 Replica Body, bodied 350 Can Am with a Classiche Type 2 Certification?????
god, what a travesty that would be. This is factory metal, people. Probably the only thing I would do is put it in its livery for its best period finish or most notable race.
The wall of the above the car (driver's left) shows the documented changes the factory made to convert the car in period.
I like the Can Am body. I just hope someone corrects all the mistakes in the latest resto. The seats are wrong (the pattern should vertical not horizontal, the font of the numbers, the stripes are too wide, the fuel fillers, the size of the roundel, rear view mirror should be red, etc. The car looks great, don't mean to criticize, but some of these resto guys just do not do enough research and for all the trouble it takes to restore a car you would think they would try to do it as accurately as possible.
For those who have not seen them yet, here is a link to some beautiful high-res pictures of this very car from a studio photo-shoot (taken for the RM auction?). http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/default.aspx?carID=16938&i=3#menu
I was lucky enough to be in Maranello the week before the RM auction and got to spend some time looking (gawking!) at 0858. I'm not expert enough to see the flaws and the anachronisims, but I was awestruck to be in the same room with just the car and a few Classiche mechanics. If only they'd started her up for me!
It's too bad that Ferrari resources were spread so thin in the late 60s. With adequate funding, they could have given McLaren a real run for their money.
Was this car freshened or made track-worthy by Classiche? Last I'd read (around the time of the failed auction) 0858 had sat for some time and required significant work. Is this correct?
Hopefully this is not too blasphemous, and won't ultimately lead to my banning, but a CanAm McLaren M6 was recently listed on ebay.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180524084899&viewitem=&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D1&category=98064 It was a no sale.
I agree! And is it the only Ferrari, in 2010, with this type of body? Because there is several P3/P4/412 with the well known body.
Yes 330 Can Am 0844 was converted to a 412P using a replica 412P body by Symbolic in the Late 90ies and 350 Can Am 0860 was converted to a 350 P4 using a Replica P4 body not by the Factory.
Thank you So it has to keep this body, to show the "diversity" of the Ferraris Sport & Prototype of the 60s.
This Can Am body is stunning in its own right, to convert the car back would be a great shame, especially as this car had a fair degree of competition success with the Can Am body. If I recall correctly it had a pretty good run of race results in the Springbok series and at one stage was involved in a titanic dice with David Piper in 0854.
The History of all of this is interesting. In the 70'ies when 0860 was converted "Back" to a P4 no one really thought to much about it or cared. In the Late 90ies when Symbolic converted 0844 "Back" to a "P3" (Really Back to a 412P) for their client who wanted a "P3" it was still not a big deal. When 0844 was auctioned off as a "P3" it brought a big price. (Personally when I saw it at Goodwood in 1998 I thought it looked great in it's original 330 Can Am Configuration). Recently RM tried to Auction 0858 as a "P4" but by the day of the Auction that became a "P4-350 Can Am". They also mentioned a "P4" body, once again via David Piper, was available for fitment, and that the Factory would Classiche this conversion as a "Type 2 Certification". (Ferrari of Historical Importance) The Factory made it very clear that if you wanted a Regular Classiche Certification this would have to be left as a 350 Can Am. The Bids were not there at the level of a P4 or even and original 412P and the car didn't sell. Different times.
