I picked up the latest issue of MT this weekend and they claim to have run the new 911 Turbo S from 0-60 in 2.8sec!

Can that be right? That's Veyron-fast for 1/10 the price

Thats just to 60 which is basically just taking off. A veyron would destroy it soon after 60.

Actually I think the Motor Trend as well as a recent Car and Driver were testing just the regular 2010 tt with the PDK. The 'S' should be even faster!

Even better where can you use that power other than a track. You try something like that around here, you will likely end up in the backseat of a minivan.

These new Turbos have incredible take-off but run out off steam (relatively) pretty soon after that and are matched by many other cars in their class at higher speeds.

I thought the way it works was two unequal sized turbos, one smaller for at lower rpm then a bigger one at higher rpm, resulting in less turbo lag and improved power?

10 second 0-120 on standard turbo pdk hardly reflects your statement......

The terrific number you quote is a result of the incredible acceleration of that car at lower speeds (it's actually quicker then Veyron in 0-50).
I meant acceleration "in gear" in upper ranges like 70-90,100-120 etc ,where it is matched exactly by a regular 599(latest EVO supercar test).
Still, nothing to complain here, just acknowledging the fact that the 911 TT is not absolutely quicker then all other cars.
I would love to see the test of it vs 458,hopefully soon....

Vein : a tubular passageway for transmitting fluid

Vane : a blade, similar to a fan, usually found in multiples and used for directing or increasing airflow

Vain: a characteristic of someone who would correct your english on a public bulletin board

    :)

My favourite fact about the previous 911 turbo is it does 40-60 in 2nd gear in 1 second.

    Well that's pretty nuts performance.
I wonder if you look at 0-60 times over the course of history what that trend would look like.

That's the best part about turbo cars: you go 0-10 in 3 seconds, then 10-60 in 1.3 seconds! :D

As a (modified) WRX driver with a mere 2 liters of displacement, I have little torque and even less hp off-boost. The car feels like a Camry for the first three seconds.

However, as you can nearly double both hp and tq numbers under pressure (~3300 rpm+), I can attest to the verity of this statement. Almost to the .1. ;)

10-60 almost outpaces the fluids in your body, and is worth every moment of the initial lag.

I <3 turbos. Hoping the next will be a 911t.

I just test drove a 2011 911 turbo with PDK, there was no turbo lag at all. That thing is quick!!! I am on a search for a white car now! It's much more fun than my current high revving M5 V10.

I drove a 2011 ttS last weekend as well, back to back with a tt 6spd. Both were very fast but something otherworldly about the PDK/S

I just had this strange scene play out in my head where a guy is arriving home late for dinner, touches the accelerator to nudge the car into the garage, and arrives through the dining room wall at 60mph - much to the disapproval of his wife, now picking plaster out of her soup.

I suppose what I'm getting at is that a point will be reached where the acceleration of these cars is far beyond that which a 'normal' healthy and fit driver could possibly control. I just wonder where that point is...

    All the best,
    Andrew.
