Hi all, on the way back from the Le-Mans Classic (great weekend) 5 mins from the ferry port. the 355 engine died. Was on the motorway doing 90-ish and then no power from either side (2.7 ECU's). This after a good 250 miles. On the way down, the left hand fan had died, but water / oil temps were low due to speed and lateness of night we were traveling.

So, any ideas on what it could be? I have an immobilizer fitted, but that affects only the starter motor, and the engine cranks fine. Just does not fire. So, it must be something common to both parts of the engine, as not even one side would fire up.

It's in the garage being worked upon. But, I'm always after suggestions.

    Thanks
    Rob

If you lost a fan, it could be from blowing a fuse...as the fans age, they start drawing excessive current. The fix is to replace them. More to the point, if they are drawing excessive current, this can damage the fuse box. Could be why your car died.

Yep, sound like an electrical problem but should be easily rectified.

Did you ever get a slow down light/s??? It could be that the cat ecu's shut the engine down? Did the car fire up after it sat for a while?

    Thanks for the response fella's.
When I found the fan not working (pulled over on the side of the road in Le Mans, with the rest of older British hardware overheating :) ) I checked the fuse's and swapped relays around. I can hear the fan trying to work, electrical noise etc. I take on board that the fuse board was rather hot at the time.

The car is decatted (test pipes) and I had no check engine lights on. Both sides just seemed to go. The car would not restart even when back to the UK after a few hours of sat waiting for Euro recovery.

We had driven approx 250 miles prior to the engine going. So, hoping it's not fuse board but who's to know huh? I'm looking at buying two replacement Spal fans (part 2049) from the "Fan Man " web site. Might as well replace both and these units seem a lot cheaper than to purchase in the UK.

    I'll keep you all updated

    Cheers
    Rob

Hi all, spoke with the garage over the weekend. The fuel pump was getting no electrical supply. This was due to a connection problem on the fuse board. Which may have been exacerbated by the fan issue which heated up the board. Anyway, they took it out, cleaned it all up, reseated connections and all is now good.

Thanks to this board, the lads have ordered 2 new fans from state side @ $117. Not sure what the tax / shipping will bring the cost to, but they had ordered fans from Italy, which without shipping were coming in at $466 per unit ! So, kudos to No Doubt and f355spider for posting up the info.

So, small amount of hassle, but I still love my car. Can't wait to get her back. Thanks for your advice chaps !

Glad to hear you got it sorted, and thanks for the update. It really irritates when a person asks for help and then never lets the community know what ever came of the problem. So again, thanks for the update because it will help out the next guy in the future.

Dave Helms is working on seperate fuse panel upgrade for the 355 that moves the two fan circuits off the main fuse panel, saving it from further damage and heat. Looks like a great idea. In the mean time, at the first sign of radiator fuses blowing on a 355, replace both fan immediately, don't wait for fuse box troubles. ;)
