I know both the car and the owner very well.

The owner is a complete gentleman and the car really nice and priced sell live on ebay the first time around. Someone new will soon become this car's fourth owner.

    Cheers,

    Bill

    Lovely car!

I wonder why would it be rusting in those spots on the door after a bare metal/everything off respray?

Following dinos for a while now and would like to get one...but pretty much a novice. What would it cost, roughly, to redo the mousehair dash and repaint in correct black? Any thoughts on what it should sell for? I know it's hard to say, but maybe someone knows and thanks in advance for any input.

FONE has a Dino on their web site. At the asking price I'm assuming it has some issues though.

It's curious that this car has the later US bumpers on Euro single struts. That would seem to indicate some possible serious front-end damage at some point. I'm sure that Euro bumpers are harder to find than late US replacements. The color is very nice, but the monochromatic interior is a bit much for my taste. It also has US red rear turn signal lenses. A lot of mixing and matching! Fred

Count $1k for the dash and $10k for the paint/repair when you get down to the rust in the doors thats bubbling thru at the structural area in the middle. Who knows what else.

    Good morning Fred,
I noted the same thing on the bumper mounts. So, I did a little informal comparo of two Dinos, and bumped (no pun) that up against some historical data. My friend's Tipo M/Series II (as you know, all Tipo L & M are Euro) has the same single-strut config as my Tipo E/Series III Euro car. However, his has the 'hook-in-mouth' long bumpers; mine has the short ones. According to The Dino Register, both cars are correct:

    " 5. Early cars - Type "E" (Series III)
European and British version changed from long front
bumpers to short ones. Exact change point unknown.
1st known car on file with short front bumpers is S/N 04428."

Since the subject of this post (05898) is a S.III Euro model and, again according to The Register, its first owner lived in Alabama, perhaps the long bumpers and red turn signal lights were added as part of the federalization process when he imported it? At any rate, the bumper change may not necessarily be indicative of any damage repair. Or, it may be one of those Dino anomalies & the factory had a set of long bumpers on the shelf when this car trundled up!!! Remember...it seems that all/most Euro cars had long bumpers until the Series III cars were introduced.

The first pic is of his S.II car; the second is of my S.III car.
    That is all, for now.
    Coop

Post Script: Hey, car and owner have Bill Noon's endorsement...that speaks volumes! :)

Coop, I agree that many strange pairings occurred during Dino construction. I've seen pictures of Euro Dinos with US recessed front parking lights, etc. However, since this car has the later front pan (as presumably yours does, as well), I would think that they would have taken the time to add the second strut to better accommodate the US bumpers. The rear bumpers are the older style used on all Euro cars--closer to the body, on one strut, with open bumper ends. As for the red rear turn-signal lenses, they were never mandatory. Many Euro cars of the day had amber rear turn-signal lenses, such as the Triumph TR-6. I think, especially in view of the leather dash and (it appears) leather panel next to the quarter window, it is more likely that one of its owners took a bit of "poetic license" with the bumpers and lights. The bubbles on the right rear fender are problematic. That doesn't appear to be a rust-prone area in most Dinos. Again, it could be evidence of an improper repair, but I wouldn't speculate on the actual cause. It is an attractive Dino, to be sure. I wish that I could give them all a home, even if it were only a foster home! Fred

Something is wrong with the front or it is something unique I have never seen before:
    1) I have never seen the very late parallel wipers with the oval grill and the large bumpers.
    2) The lower part of the front shows also the round air intakes from E-Series which does not fit to the oval grill and the large bumpers..
Beside this I really like how the car looks.
    Regards
    Nicolai

Any speculation on rust? When I see bubbling in an odd spot like this I would guess it is in many other places. Has anyone seen rust here before and restored a car and what did they find. Does anyone see any other flags with the body from the photos?

All Ferraris of that era were routinely left outside in raw fabricated form with no primer....some longer than others....there's photos that prove it.....

I am confused (what a surprise, given that it is 3:23AM as I am typing this) by this Dino. The serial number is 05898. When you check it on dinoregister.com, record # 3 says:

    "SERIAL: 05898
Record: 3 No picture of this wonderful car available. If you have one on hand, please upload here.
    Model: 246GT
    Year:
    Years Own: 1988-99
    Last: PIANTIERI (3RD OWNER)
    First: STEVEN J.
    City: ORLANDO
St: FL Comment: PURCHASED JAN.16,1988.SEE #02444.
    Zip: 32804

    Mileage: 32400/88 Power Windes:
License: EI5 73W Wheels: Standard Cromodora
Wide Fender Flares: No Daytona Seats: Yes
    Headlamp Covers: No Grilleguard: No
    Airconditioning:" [presumably No]

What throws me off is the comment: "PURCHASED JAN.16,1988.SEE #02444"

The general entry for #02444 on dinoregister.com reads:

"Serial Record Model Year Years Own Name Details
    02444 1 246GT 1971 1971-84 UNKNOWN Details
    02444 2 1984-98 PIANTIERI Details
    02444 3 SEPT.87 C R A S H E D ! Details
    05898 3 1988-99 PIANTIERI (3RD OWNER) Details"

The detail listing for Record 3 reads as follows:

    "SERIAL: 02444
Record: 3 No picture of this wonderful car available. If you have one on hand, please upload here.
    Model: 246GT
    Year: 1971
    Years Own: SEPT.87
    Last: C R A S H E D !
    First:
    City:
St: Comment: REMAINS STILL OWNED BY PIANTIERI.

    Mileage: Power Windes:
    License: Wheels: Standard Cromodora
    Wide Fender Flares: Daytona Seats:
    Headlamp Covers: Grilleguard:
    Airconditioning:"

It seems odd to me that 05898 links to 02444, that 02444 record entry 3 states "REMAINS STILL OWNED BY PIANTIERI," and that record entry 4 for 02444 has somehow become 05898.

I assume and hope that this sequence simply reflects the fact that Mr. Piantieri owned 02444, that it was crashed/totaled, and that he bought another Dino, 05898, after 02444 was crashed, and that 05898 is not the old 02244. Hopefully Matthias Bartz and/or the current owner of 05898 can explain why the two cars are linked together the way they are on dinoregister.com. If the purpose was simply to show that the owner bought another Dino after his first was crashed, then I think that should be made clear so that no one ends up incorrectly thinking somehow that 05898 is really the old 02444, because I think that 05898 is a good looking car and I'd be interested in it (assuming it isn't badly rusted).

Given that my mousehair dash cost me about $1200 to $1300 to redo recently (including the cost of the correct mousehair, but NOT including the cost to remove and reinstall the dash), your estimate seems a little low to me, at least on the West Coast.

"and that 05898 is not the old 02444"
that can`t be, because #02444 would have different wipers (old style), chassis no. #05898 looks very original, knowing the body no. would be the 100% prove.

Steve (the owner) still has both of these Dino's. 02444 is still crashed and likely damaged beyond repair and in long-term storage. He replaced that car after the crash with the one he is currently offering for sale.

Good bet high bidder might be able to strike a deal and get a 2/3rds of a parts car with a complete interior, engine and gearbox along with this car.

Anyone interested should simply email the guy. He is total honest and trying to be completely fair and not looking to take advantage of anyone.

    Cheers,

The bubbles may not be rust. Could be simply paint bubble related to primer coat. I have seen this occur soon after a clean paint (bare metal/primer/paint) where it was clearly not rust.

The view of the driver scoop (behind the door) reveals a bit of primer with grooves and less-than-perfect finish. Thus suggests that bondo had been added.

The clock chrome bezel is missing - not an uncommon occurrence following service.

Finally, the front side "bullet" light appears to have an incorrect profile - seems a bit tall - both sides.

Nonetheless, this is a nice car.

Did it ever occur to you that I own both 5898 AND 02444? I crashed 02444 twenty five-ish years ago and still own it. I am selling 5898. I 've owned this one for 22 years, as your research shows.

Here's a photo of the rebuilt engine from my Ferrari Dino, #02444. It's been in my living room for about a decade! A tree jumped out in front of me in 1987. I used the insurance proceeds to purchase 5898 which is now for sale on eBay.

On top of the table is my recent fascination - electric RC helicopters. They are incredibly powerful, mopre deleicate than any vintage Ferrari (if that's possible) and I enjoy crashing them on a regular basis.

My 'other' car is the Fiat Jolly, see the painting on the wall.
