anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the rear engine cover louvers so that I can repaint the lid properly. I see rivets on the inside holding the screen on and I see some up top that look to be holding the louvers on. does everything have to be removed to get the louvers off-screen, splash cover, etc? also, how are you guys removing the rivets on the top side without destroying the louvers? regards, Paul

Drill baby drill (out the rivets).

Drill all those rivets out. The screen and cover on the bottom will come off as well. You will probably need some sort of right angle drill to get to some of the rivets. I used a dremel with a flexible attachment and a 1/8" drill bit.

It's certainly easier if you remove the lid first. I've done this twice. First time with it still on the car and the second time I removed it. Either way works but removing it is my preferred option. Good luck

thanks guys. can you get away with just drilling out the top rivets to get out the louvers or do you have to drill everything out ie:inside grill side too. also, are they just standard aluminum rivets? are they easily sourced if not?

    regards, Paul

Drill out all the rivets you can see. You probably still won't be able to remove anything...keep looking, find some more, drill those. Still can't, find some more, drill those. The material is easy to drill, but sometimes the heads break off leaving the body and then you have to pound it out or pull it out with a pliers.

Order new rivets because you want black rivets and at least for me those were hard to find. I ordered these:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ultimate-Rivet-1-8-small-hd-ABS4246urr-BLACK-250ct-/250597219866?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Race_Car_Parts&hash=item3a58c21e1a
They're great. 50 is enough if this is all you're doing.

Just do it. Start drilling, in 30 minutes you'll have it off and have everything all figured out. It's a simple job.

    Go to the DIY 328 section and Look up;

"Restoration of frame beneath rear bonnett." Its my post.

Sure you drill out the rivets, drilling out the ones holding the louver you'll find that you'll have to hold drill at an angle, of course.
For me, I found using a dremel with the flexshaft attachment made it more possible to get a better approach.
Wrap the spinning sections and other areas with blue painters tape so you dont scratch anything.
Maybe you can post pics and your procedure for removing the louvers too.

    Good Luck..

Does asnyone know of a source for the screen material? A couple of years ago I had an oil line let go causing a small oil fire when it hit the header/muffler. Fortunately the car was mostly OK and the only outward signs of damage was that the silicone sleeves on the plug wires melted. I replaced the rear bank of wires, the hose, and put oil in her - ran fine! The problem is that the flames took off the anodizing or whatever the coating is on the screen and also annealed the metal so its very soft. I've been thinking about drilling out the rivits and repainting the screen with some high temp paint but I,m kind of afraid the screen will fall apart. I'm pretty reluctant to touch it without a source for new screen material. Any clues?

Exactly what I was wondering. I need a new screen under there too, so when I have it repainted in a year or two I want a new screen installed as mine is done.

The screen didn't look like anything special. Looked like some sort of animal crate type material. Mine was ok, so I just repainted it, but I remember thinking it looked pretty easy to recreate. Just cut and bend a couple of the edges.

I believe the home depot screen is screen used for tile and stucco.

    Home Depot!?!
Home Depot carries Ferrari Parts? The same Home Depot that has only 1/2 inch intervals in their line of crappy bolts? I'll look but I can almost feel Bullfighter's word lashing. And he would be just the leader of all of the villagers carrying torches! Seriously, If I can find a decent match for the screen I'll give it a try!

    Thanks,

    Steve
