Sure looks like the one that just showed-up at my doorstep. $21? And some parts dealers get $143 for the same part? Ouch. It smacks of the $400 SPAL radiator fan that I got from Paul's Street Rod parts for $100....same part. You've got to do your research on these cars.....
We'll see if it fits. I've ordered Porsche parts from Pelican parts before, so I know they're a good outfit. Nothing against the parts dealers that have it for more. They're just pricing it based on their costs. I used to be a product line manager for a laser company, and from time to time I'd have to put a price on something that just went through too many layers of distribution before reaching the end user. In some cases we'd end up selling something for three times the retail price and still making a very small margin. In that case, we added cost by testing, crating, supplying plumbing, instructions warranty etc. In Ferrari's case, it's probably just the need to cover high overhead (racing etc).
Holy smokes! It's here already! I ordered this yesterday afternoon and it shipped via ground. It looks like the dimesions are identical. I held it up to the screen and tried to match the sizes, but I didn't zoom the Ferrari tank on my computer screen (left) enough to make them exactly the same size in the photo. They're both made by ZF, but the part numbers do not appear to be the same. Mine says PA66 GF 25 on the side of it. (the one posted previously looks like it might say PA68?) Other than one additional ridge on the side-wall of the tank, I can't see a difference. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Funny, mine looks just like the one shown in Top's picture...hose clamp and all. Mine is leaking as well now, looks like I'll be getting a replacement. Good luck and let us know when you fit it roadracer- wouldn't be the first time i've ordered from pelican for the 355!
The reservoir I've just recieved from Foreign Cars Italia (ordered it and had it the next day!!) matches the one on the left of the photo...no ridge. Has anyone installed this yet? I've siphoned-out the power steering fluid and am thinking of siphoning the coolant tank, too, so that I can more easily gain access to the hose fittings underneath the reservoir. Thoughts?
I haven't done mine yet. I'll probably give it a go this Sunday. Hopefully the extra ridge won't cause a fitment issue for me.
Just checked mine and I've go the old one I'll get this done soon. Roadracer, let us know how you get on with the BMW pump. Is there a write up for this? Seems like an easy enough fix.
Power Steering Reservoir is now installed. I did siphon the coolant from the overflow tank, and remove it to enable easier access to the clamps on the 2 hoses to the bottom of the PS reservoir. More involved, but ultimately, easier.
How long did the whole thing take? Did you end up having to crawl into the engine compartment? I've found myself kneeling on the frame members a couple times. Any unusual tools needed? I'm thinking of tackling this one tomorrow, or may put it off until after Concorso Italiano. I have a lot of cleaning to do in the next few weeks.
I noticed mine was sorta half-a55ed screwed down with a little leakage just the other day. Must have blown off fairly recently because I hadn't noticed it ever before. I mentioned it today at Stoogefest and I'm surprised Ernie didn't suggest that "Stooge fix" of wrapping it with a hose clamp. LOL. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the Pelican part to see if it will work just fine for the 355.
It took 2 evenings work. First was spent siphoning fluids carefully so as not to have them all over the engine compartment. I used a Plews Siphon Gun to suction the coolant and then the power steering fluid, and then used some paper towels in the reservoir to get the last of the lingering PS fluid. Second evening involved removing the coolant tank (2 hoses on the bottom of the tank, and 2 hoses at the front), and then the reservoir (2 hoses at the bottom of the unit). Put it all back together, and add coolant and PS fluid. Drove it last evening and all is well. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for the additional details Bob. I just finished replacing mine today. I'm happy to report that the $21 BMW power steering tank (also made by ZF), works just fine. Haven't put any miles on it yet, but did run it from cold to fully warmed up. I took a lot of photos. I'm going to edit them now and post a how-to thread. I'll post a link once I've got it done.
Thanks Bob, I'm posting the link here, so folks can find the other thread: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292079 Who knows, maybe my BMW tank will filter backwards, or clog up or something. I'll keep folks posted, but I expect it's just going to work. How was the fitment of the bracket and the Ferrari tank? Was it snug, or does the tank float around a little? Did you use the new bracket, or just bend the tabs on the old one?
I bought the new bracket (without tabs), and I found that it was just a touch smaller than the diameter I would have thought correct. As you cinched-up the socket head bolts, it holds the reservoir tight, but the bracket faces do not touch the alloy bracket.
