How many are on the road and how many have had a fire, I would think that just these two make for quite a high persentage? Russell
It's the right of passage for every mid engine F car! We've all seen pictures of every model catching fire and here's 458.
Trouble with aluminum bodies and chassis is they burn. The world's navies were going to aluminum superstructure until the Falklands war when the Royal Navy discovered the superstructure burned like a match when subjected to high temperatures. Trend halted. Will not affect cars where nobody is dropping bombs on them, but obviously a problem for fires, as well. The black car is undoubtedly totalled. If the fire was intense enough to burn through the body panels, it probably took out the load bearing part of the chassis and a goodly portion of the engine. Way too expensive to repair. A parts car. I am not sure if I would use the fire extinguisher. If the car was on fire I would let it burn to a crisp... then claim on the insurance for a new car.
Screw the fire extinguisher. Get some hot dogs. Thats what insurance is for. Terry is almost certainly correct. The aluminum structure does not need much heat for long to lose its strength. No insurance company in this country would want the liability of putting it back on the road. Call Ted Rutland, its a parts car.

I wondered the same thing when told I'd need a fire extinguisher if I went on the track with it. Luckily I didn't need one! OR a helmet.. I must need a more extreme track day next time!
It was posted several days ago in the 458 section. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=291188
You're right. That would never happen with a German car...oops. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
There is simply NO excuse for a brand new 250K dollar plus vehicle to catch fire under these conditions. There is simply NO excuse for ANY new vehicle to spontaneously catch fire. Im a Ferrari fan for life but c'mon you "defender of the marque, no matter what kinda guys" admit that this is a joke!
I agree with your position about the lack of an excuse for a fire. However, I would like to understand a bit more about how these fires occur. Perhaps Rifledriver can comment. Obviously if gas or oil or power transmission fluids were leaking, then this would be the source. These leaks can happen on a new vehicle if the hose seals or gaskets were faulty.
