My C5z and all ferraris have never seen a dealer. I have rebuilt gearboxes engines you name it. The 550 is very easy to work on except you must work on it on the lift so that you can get the front raises to a comfortable level or you kill your back. I have worked of ferraris for decades but the C5Z only since '04 and eventhough i race it nothing breaks. I find the C5 much more difficult to work on because things are not well thought out. Ferrari will just give you enough room to work especially if you use the right tools like thin snap-ons or USAG F1 Ferrari tools. Try for example to screw in a remote clutch bleeder on a C5 without taking out the torque tube and you know what I mean! I tried and failed even after making special tools. I gave up and figure I'll just bleed the clutch the sloppy way. If you have ever put headers on a C5 how did you like trying to remove the air rails? Now that is a dumb design too. Ferrari have always been a dream for me to work on with just enough room to do the job without having to take 1/2 the car apart. There are minor issues like degreeing 4 separate shafts vs 1 stick things like that. Ferrari does not use little wheel bearings that must be changed for track duty. The ferrari suspension is much more tuneable and it is really nice to not have leaf springs! I have never worked on a 575 but basically it is very much the same with small individual differences. It is usually always better to buy the latest model you can afford. You can rebuild clutch cheap I did one ferrari for less than 100 bucks. I could do the same with the 550. You know if you do your own work. Fort Wayne clutch or Friction materials, resurface plates surface the flywheel and presure plate to the set-up height and you are good to go. If you don't have those skills then its buy one from Ferrari at maybe 1500-2000 bucks and then same torque tube layout as the Vettes no big deal. Ferrari also does intelligent things GM does not. For example if there is a place you need to severe the brake or clutch line to do service they put 1 way valves in so they don't all leak out. The biotch is getting the bolt out of the block but that is just intelligent use of force vs. the GM method lets let it all leak out as you search your garage for a vacuum plug.
Lin- Affirmative. Go to your dealer and have him turn it off with an SD2/3. Should no tbe that expensive. Taz Terry Phillips
Taz, Have you had the tmps turned off on a 575? I recently had my SA in for service specifically for that problem and they said that it couldn't be turned off. Not really knowing one way or the other I decided to have it replaced elsewhere and it was approximately 25% less then the dealer.
FYI...After you have it turned off, it will read "off" in the display upon start up for approximately 15 seconds each time. Had mine turned off for free while getting a service done. If they are checking the parameters with the computer while in for service, it just takes a couple finger clicks and not a big deal.
Hi got mine switched off at the local dealer and does not read 'off' in the display when car is started. Mine is an Europaean car and over here the TMPS is NOT compulsory. Maybe it does not light 'off' cause of that. Rgds Gianni
Yes I am very familiar with the "take 1/2 the car apart" issues with the C5. The C6 is even worse. Air tubes - I don't have no stinkin air tubes cluttering up my engine bay. I am very pleased to see there is a forum like this for the Ferarri's. I would have been surprised if there wasn't. Are there complete repair manuals available for the 550/575? TAZ, The F45 system (replaced by the F55 in 2003) shocks on the C5 are built by Delphi and are not rebuildable. To replace the shocks is over $2000 and are very hard to find. GM has a system that allows F45 owners to upgrade to the F55 for just a little more than the shocks for the F45 system cost. I had the F45 system on my C5 but it has since been deleted along with the transverse leaf springs for Pfadt coilovers and full race suspension. Very cool stuff is the Pfadt products. The F55 system also known as Magnaride uses magnetic particles suspended in a fluid and as a electric field is passed through the shock it changes the fluid dynamics in the suspension and therefore can infinitely vary its damping. GM traded the F55 technology with Ferarri for it's ceramic brake technology that is used on the ZR1.
Michael- I confused the Bilsteins on my 1987 Z51 with my 5 Z06s. Would think I would have remembered, but I did not. The Delphi magnetorheological shock absorbers introduced in the non-Z06 Corvettes made it to Ferrari by 2006 in the 599. I assume they will also be in the 612 replacement next year and will then be standard or optional across all Ferrari models. The Z06 already had Brembo brakes. Moving up to CCM brakes was the next logical step and they will be optional on the 2011 Z06s as a Z07 option package. At $9500 including the brakes, Michelin ZPs, and magnetorheological shock absorbers, that is a real bargain. Just the shocks on the California are over $5K. The extraneous carbon fiber pieces are a separate option on the Z06. Incidentally, GM spun off Delphi in 1999 and sold most of its Delphi shares then (~$10B). So Delphi is an independent company, but very dependent on GM business. Taz Terry Phillips
Gee....I didn't know the TPMS can be turned off... I will definitely do that as mine is dead also...555 Regarding the tranny... I prefer manual also but there isn't many choices here in Thailand and F1 I must take... The 575 F1 programe is just so-so for me. Normal driving, the change is slow but I can time it and adapt my style. It's very relaxing (for the car). In sport mode it's not bad if I am heavy on the gas. But around town at low speed, it's as stupid as early F360...555. So, in that situation I will drive But F1 can't compare to manual when it comes to driving involvement. If you prefer to really drive the car, there is no substitute for good old 3 pedals and a stick in between the seats. So, if it were me buying a 575 now, I'd prefer a manual.
OK. This is the car I would buy in a split second. I am not going to call them as a 2005 is going to be out of my budget plus these cars that get advertised in the DuPont Reg. seem to want some sort of market premium because they paid for the add. http://www.dupontregistry.com/autos/Search/DRauSearchDetails.aspx?itemid=814935 Ok I understand the history of the Daytona seats but is there anything else special about them besides the look?
Michael- That car was sold to a collector in NJ some months ago and has not been available since then. The dealership has been using it as bait for people searching for 575Ms. It sold for between $115K and $125K in a private sale. It belonged to a good friend of mine and was nearly perfect. It even had FHP. Daytona seats came on the 365 GTB/4 and everybody loved the style. That is all there is to it. Taz Terry phillips
I have not bought a used car of this type or financial outlay before. Part of the argument I have made with the spouse is that I can by a Ferrari and enjoy it for 4 or more years then move on to something else maybe and not loose the kind of money that I would if I spent the same $100+ K on a new ZR1, Porsche etc... I am not looking to make money on the transaction or even break even unless I decided I could not part with it and maybe not even then. I don't buy cars for investments although I have gotten lucky on three of my previous cars and sold them for more than I paid. $115K hummmmmmmmmm I think I would have pulled the trigger at the lower end of your range. I figured the car was probably listed for the mid 130's.
Hi Terry, any way you could be so kind to advise number and/or location of said relay ? Cannot find in the Owners manual any relay referring to F1 gearbox. Just to check if mine have been replaced or not. Tks and best Rgds Gianni
Gianni- One thing to watch for, though, is that the connectors for the 30 amp and 50 amp relays are different. There are several ways to make the new relay fit, the best probably being to get a new connector from an electrical supply outlet. Taz Terry Phillips
Stock brakes on the Z06 aren't Brembo's. The CCM on the ZR1 are. I replaced the stock Z06 brakes with Stoptech for the track and switched out the leaf spring suspension for LG motorsports coilover with Pfadt bars. Now the car is wonderful. The coilovers on the Vette made it more comfortable and more trackable. A win win.
I have not tracked my current ZO6 but I did switch from the padlets to real pads. I prefer the Hawk brands for street use. My C5 is still using the stock brakes but I do use an aftermarket rotor package and somewhat aggressive pad but not really a full race pad. I have found that I am pretty easy on my brakes and have not needed the additional heat capability of an aftermarket kit. Plus I don't typicaly do events when its super hot anymore. I am getting to old to take the heat so I have to get out of the kitchen. I have the full Pfadt suspension in my C5 looks oddly orange anodized under there. Now I am just trying to figure out how to start my search for a car. I would prefer to find something somewhat local as I am in a very busy period. I will probably look up the local Ferrari enthusiast group and go to their next event maybe even find the car.
Abe- You are correct. I seem to have forgotten everything about my Z06 Corvettes as soon as I sold the last one two years ago. Could not even remember my user name or password last time I tried to get on the Corvette and Z06 sites. I can tell you for sure my 575M has Pagid 4-4 Orange racing pads as part of the FHP package (available for ~$500 per set of four without wear wires). They work fine, but do squeal on rare occasions. They really squeal if not bedded properly. I note one discounter is selling a full set of four C6 Z06 brake calipers, rotors, Hawk pads, and SS brake lines, plus brake fluid, for only $2100. That is a real bargain. Taz Terry Phillips
The problem I found with the Z06 was for the track. Plus, to replace all the padlets in the front for some reason cost me $875. Don't ask. I still don't know. My rectum still smarts from that one. With the stop techs I just run RS19s for street and track and once bedded in are quiet with an occasional squeak. On the 944 Turbo I tracked I had porterfields which used to announce my arrival miles in advance.
