Rory's first car for Ferrari I believe pretty much copied Newey's Williams. I can remember reporters joking about it ... so I'd rather have Newey please, particularly because he seems to be going through a good period.

You must be talking about the F310, wich still was a Barnard car. Rory´s first Ferrari was quite different from the Williams, not a bad thing as the Williams of that year was crap (although that one was not designed by Newey).

BTW, many folks here talk about Adrian Newey as he was God, but putting things into perspective, he has done one good car in the last decade.

    Well...that's because he is...

Why do you think McLaren wouldn't let him go to Jaguar and basically gave him the moon? How many championships have they won since he left? ONE...(08)

It should be noted that Williams has not won a championship since he left...

    Newey cars

    Williams:
    92-WDC, WCC
    93-WDC, WCC
    94-WCC
    96-WDC, WCC
    97-WDC, WCC

    McLaren:
    98-WDC, WCC
    99-WDC

Yep, as I said, one (potentially) winning car in the last 10 years: this years Red Bull. Last year Red Bull was great too, but before that he made a few mediocre Red Bulls and a few bad McLarens. One of those McLarens was so bad that it didn´t race.

Not disrespect for his achievements intended, but just let´s not get crazy about any single designer. John Barnard was God once too, and now he´s designing furniture.

please don't mention Barnard, that crook stole so much money from the Scuderia (remember the GTO office in England because he hated working in Italy ? ) as he knew they were getting desperate after using that useless Postelthwaite (sp?) and his mobile chicane design !!

When Byne saw the Barnard car he just wrote the year off to testing, for all that money all Ferrari got were the paddle shifts and it still didn't get them a WDC or WCC

Who did Todt and Brawn ask for when it came time for designer ??

    John,

You are being way too hard on Barnard ... Prost very nearly won the WDC with one of his cars and they were competitive.

Barnard designed the all conquering McLarens that Gordon Murray just warmed over for the next few years and allowed everybody to think he was the God. Murray has a way too big opinion of himself IMO.

Yes, Barnard wasn´t that bad. I´ve read that Todt didn´t want to get rid of him, but he just wasn´t willing to move to Maranello. Personal reasons I suppose. All that stuff of Schumacher asking for his dream team of Brawn-Byrne might be just a coincidence.

Ahh...who can forget the legendary MP4/18?

Newey is a great designer. But as of late, his creation is being overshadowed by a team with sub-par team and race strategies.

For the same reason Domenicali must go as an average car with gifted drivers is going nowhere with a consistently weak showing of team race tactics.

Given what went before (and since) distancing himself from the Maranello machinations was a wise move.
(Be careful Pete we shouldn't be seen agreeing;) )

    Ask Brawn and Byrne...

Just imagine a Barnard with 5 consecutive titles with Ferrari. More than a God. Scary.

I had a chat yesterday with someone very near the Ferrari F1 team. Not criticizing, just reporting what I was told:

    - Montezemolo is trying to "Italianize" the F1 team rather then going for the best people no matter the nationality (as was done in the past)

    - Domenicali onboarded several guys just because "friends" or close to him.

    - No one is "afraid" of Domenicali...he is too soft and no one cares of his reactions. When Todt was around everyone was trembling when something was not done in the proper way.

    - Alonso is desperate...he is making so many mistakes as result of this situation

    - Massa: he is such a nice guy but he is very far from his top levels. Cannot understand why his contract was renewed so early.

    - guy recently hired from McLaren is very average and got wrong the past 3 cars.

    - the current Fearrai F1 car is really average...it seems that internally they "revamped" the Alain Prost's joke when he once said "this car is a real tractor".

Wow. Alonso definitely did not intend to sign up for this mess. How unfortunate.

If Ferrari would give Alonso a Top 3 car and hold up their end during the race (strategy, pit stops), he would most likely be on podium every race.

I can't think of anyone racing now that could do much better in Alonso's position.

There are several key elements missing from Ferrari's recent Golden Era----Brawn, Todt, Schumacher in his prime and of course virtually unlimited testing and there wasn't a multi-year engine freeze, which goes against the very NATURE of F1. It has always been a sport to see who can build the fastest engine that can last the distance in combination with other factors. Now with the engines virtually frozen for years, it's more about seeing who can take care of their tires best.....

I'm not sure I'd agree that Alonso is desperate, and yes he's made some mistakes but he's also been at the end of some horrific bad luck in recent races: the timing of the safety car deployment in Valencia; backmarkers refusing to get out of the way ASAP in Canada; the penalty at Siverstone and again the timing of the safety car deployment, to name but three.

Massa's struggling because, like Schumacher, he can't get the tyres to heat up enough to get the best out of them. As for why his contract was renewed so early, that's easy to answer, he's a amiable team player who Alonso can naturally dominate over a season without causung too many problems within the team.

Don't forget that Ferrari went to alot of trouble and expense to get Alonso into the team for a reason and that reason is that they feel he is their best chance of another Championship winning season. Massa's a good driver but Alonso is better, whether people like him or not it's a fact.
Can't say that I agree with this statement either. At Silverstone the Ferrari was rated by some as being the next fastest car behind the Red Bulls, ahead of the McLarens, the Mercedes, the Renaults et al.

Unfortunately the team have been unable to make the most of the performance for a variety of reasons but that doesn't make the car really average. I'd say it's currently sitting between the McLaren and the Mercedes and the difference varies from track to track.

Ferrari aren't the only ones struggling to get the best out of their cars though, look at Red Bull. With the car they have, they should be well on their way to wrapping up both Championships already but they're not, they're playing catch up to McLaren!.

As for: "Domenicali must leave Ferrari F1 Team?" , the teams success or failure does not rest on one man alone, it's a team effort.

People on here seem to have very selective memories talking about stratergy errors, pitlane mishaps, poor performances etc.,since Domenicali has been in charge.I seem to recall that it took the "dream Team" five years to finally win the WDC and that was with the worlds best driver (at the time) behind the wheel!.

I also seem to recall such things as driveshafts being spat out whilst driving down the pitlane, Ferrari's catching fire in the pitlane, Ferrari's sitting on jacks waiting because the wrong tyres had been brought out to fit onto the car, bargeboards and other aero pieces falling off the car whilst it drove round Melbourne, suspicions about illegal size barge boards, flexi floors etc. Strangely enough, all these things occured during Jean Todts reign!.

And when it comes to all this talk of: "Ferrari need Briatore", don't make Me laugh!. TifosiUSA is the only one on here who seems to be using any common sense. No matter how much some of you might want it to happen, it just isn't going to. Briatore has far too many skeletons in his closet and a far too dubious business history for Ferrari to want to touch him with the proverbial barge pole.

Ron Dennis?, forget it!, he's too busy trying to prove to the world that McLaren are the greatest car company that ever existed by copying everything that Enzo Ferrari ever did in the sixty years previous (get real Ron!, Enzo Ferrari you ain't!). My monies on him being buried in the grounds of the McLaren Factory. I suspect his wife said to him: "Ron, it's either Me or Mclaren, choose!", to which he replied: "Don't forget to close the door behind you when you leave!".

Martin Whitmarsh?, nope!, he's too much of a mcLaren man, he'd never want to work for Ferrari. (I could see him replacing Jean Todt as head of the FIA one day though).

Christian Horner?, I think he's happy beating Ferrari at their own game at the moment, but if there's too much interference from those above him, he could possibly be tempted.

I think Ferrari will stick with Domenicali for the time being and then quietly promote him somewhere else later on.

Do you have some inside information that confirms that statement or are you basing it on Ross brawns TV and public persona?. For all we know he might be a nightmare to work for.

Where's the threat made by Domenicali?. He's not said: "If we don't win you're all fired!" has he?. As I read it he merely states that if people don't truly believe in Ferrari's ability to win, then maybe they'd be better off somewhere else. Quite frankly, I could easily see Enzo Ferrari Himself making this very statement.

Do you think others like Ron Dennis would not apply the same thinking and attitude to their teams?. I doubt it very much!. If your team members don't believe you can win, how much effort are they going to make for you?.

    Check this out :

Stefano Domenicali has warned any Ferrari employees who believe the team can no longer win the title to look for another job.

Ferrari's title challenge has been derailed by the dominant pace of the McLaren and Red Bull machines and hampered by FIA steward decisions in the European and British Grands Prix.

Despite the setbacks, Fernando Alonso remained adamant that he could still win the title after Silverstone, where a drive-through penalty for overtaking off the track cost him a points finish, and Domenicali backed his driver's claims.

"Anyone who does not believe that we can win the world championship would do better looking for another job," said Domenicali over the weekend. "No one here is giving up: there are still nine races to go and anything can happen. We will have to do our job perfectly, that is to say the Ferrari way and then the results will come."

Domenicali also defended the performances of team newcomer Fernando Alonso.

"Driving for Ferrari has a different weight. Some say that once you are in the car it is all the same, which is absolutely not true: the pressures on our team are not comparable to the other teams, Red Bull, McLaren or Mercedes."

Domencali pressuring anyone is quite funny!!! Support or leave? Wow you are quite the titan Stefano Domencali!!!

Someone posted much earlier that Whitmarsh is too soft. Thats also very funny given Mclarens' results of late. Whitmarsh is a superb leader. Period.

Ferrari would be lucky to have Whitmarsh caliber leadership.

A leaders role is to take the pressure for the team so they can do their job properly ... he is doing the complete opposite. You definitely don't push the pressure down the chain.

If your team is under performing you talk to them and work out what is required to fill the holes and make it happen and provide the environment they need.

Ferrari is completely fncked AGAIN, I feel for Alonso. I would take any seat I could almost to get out of Ferrari if I was Alonso, even a Williams seat.
