I definitly get your point about history, especially for the 500. Behind that 100%. Unfortunately drivers get old and retire. That stupid circle of life stuff. The kids of Unser, Andretti, et al, and thie r kids have not filled the void left by the mega stars of old.

I think we did get spoiled from Al Unser to Little Al, Mario to Michael. Always cool to have the name Andretti, Unser, Foyt out there. But I wonder...as the second and third generations of those famed names came and went and may not have fulfilled that same passion in the fans' hearts, did we become jaded? Did we get stuck in the past and not able to accept the newer drivers? I don't know.

Marco Andretti. I really want to like him because I want him to be Mario Andretti. That is never going to happen. Its not fair to Marco and its not fair to me to put those expecations on him. I just have to accept him for what he is capable of in his on skin/skill.

In the meantime, I'm watching and waiting for the next superstar to appear and fill that need of watching a complete natural move through their career.

Perhaps 10 or 12 years ago, someone did a poll asking
which Indy Car driver was favorite.

This was interesting as CART was clinging to life and the
IRL was sputtering to get started.

Response to the poll was interesting however as the top
mentioned drivers were perhaps one or two generations
removed with Foyt, Unsers, Johncock, Rutherford, Mario
topping the list with the (then) current crop far down
    the list.

Of course, these drivers competed in the day when
talent won over a suitcase full of money. This was one
part of CART's downfall as many top drivers who wanted
to go there simply couldn't due to lack of funds; the
price in 1999, for example, was $4m to merely get a
    look-in.

In any case, it would be interesting to see the results
    of such a poll today.

The fact that Milka finished three laps down today, while all the other finishers were on the lead lap, should just provide more evidence that she belongs behind CITGO's public relations table, not behind the wheel.

True, but "only" 7 seconds behind the slowest car (p22). Obviously she likes it in the rear. <g>

She was off the qualifying pace of the next slowest car by 11mph / 7.5 seconds!?! Simple math shows says she'll be 7.5 minutes behind the next slowest car at the end of a 60 lap race = to possible some 7.5 laps down. What was race control thinking to let her run?

Agreed she has no business behind the wheel.

I listened to her radio channel for a lot of the Glen race, her team told her when to pick up the throttle and when to brake almost the whole way around the track; "Go now! Brake, brake, brake!, ...put your foot down halfway through the apex, Milka..." Even my 10 yr old daughter thought it was funny. Her team really sounded frustrated at her lack of pace. they told her several times "Go faster, Milka!" She really should be removed from the series.

There was an interview with Vic Elford on the British TV coverage of the Le Mans Classic event - I didn't know that he used to be Duno's manager but was let go, and he was extremely scathing about her (I could give a summary if anyone's interested).

He was her driving coach as well, but he sorta gave up when she never improved. I've heard that he was never paid completely also.

Uh yeah I'd like to hear your summary.

I've heard that she and Chavez were VERY close at one time and she accompanied him on many "business" trips. Chavez is now focused on getting an F1 drive for Pastor Maldonado. Rumor has it that Milka could follow Pastor to Europe as a manager and rep for Venezuela.

Well, it wasn't a hugely long interview (dammit! - he's one of the more interesting guys to hear reminiscences from ) but basically he said she dispensed with his services and has gone backwards ever since, so the interviewer said hadn't she looked quite good in sportscars, to which Vic said No, she was carried by her co-drivers (Andy Wallace, the Franchittis, Carpentier, Manning, etc.); everything they achieved was down to them, and all the disasters were down to her.

If it wasn't for the dictator Chavez she wouldn't be in an Indy car.
How could she in good conscience live her dream when her country
is heading down the same path as Cuba? Sad. Don't care how big
    her tata's are.

What is sad is that there are hundreds of unemployed drivers with more talent begging for a ride while Ms Connection gets to play race car driver.

Toronto. Another race, another BF for being too slow. (After 10 of 85 laps.)

I can see the ads now: Used Dellara chassis -- very low miles. ;)

Sadly, having a financial backer is more important than talent. Milka is an obvious example but there are many others in this position.
The biggest problem is her being a moving chicane!

Again back to my question, you are telling me there isn't a more talented driver in Venezuela that would be less of an embarassment? 10 laps, black flag, I'm sure when the green flag dropped the black flag was already in the other hand waiting to go.

There are a few but apparently none that have photos of themselves with a strap on giving it to President Chavez.

I can think of no other explanation as to why she's still in the car.

Curious if the IRL or "The League" posts stewards notes
    anywhere on the Internet.

A transcript of what race control, stewards or corner
marshalls are saying on their radios about Milka would
    be interesting to read.

Of course there is. He's leading the GP2 drivers championship...

I think the point is IRL should draw the line somewhere. What are the criteria to let a driver race in this series? Clearly a lowly one.

I say again - her husband is her sponsor - simple as that - she does not race there is no sponsor - he doesn't care about racing at all - I believe he has never even seen her race in an Indy car - he is just letting her do her thing

    You forgot: "Driven gently."

I can't imagine the embarrassment of being pulled off the track for lack of pace - during a race.
