I think you should highlight "used" in your post-- are there any used cars which run flawlessly for decades?

 

My departed Mechanic would joke:

"Because none of them RUN long enough, to get HIGH mileage!!!!!"

He was referring to the vintage years mostly, as it's always been a factor that the cars were FAR too complicated to have "just anyone" monkey with them.

On the more modern Ferraris, it's strictly a manuever to retain resale value......which is odd.

Like buying a sailboat, and never leaving the Yacht Club.....

Periodic Inspection, based upon mileage....IF you leave parked, then it's based upon time...

Most of the early 12's were very reliable. Back in the day there was just no support. Once I got my Lusso running I had no problems with it at all. Used it as a daily driver for 3 years and put 30,000 miles on it. Of course those miles were majically disappeared when the next owner sold it

THAT would indeed be impressive....along with it's noticable lack of 1977 rustproofing.....it's just wadded up sheetmetal now.......it DOES have the badge indent, if you know what you are looking at.......

this really a load of crap . Ferraris are more simple than say a MB. Other cars have more electronics and less space in which to work. These aren't jet engine we have .


Most competent mechanics have the ability to work on ferrari . Just look at the number of people with limited mechanical ability do their own majors.


Ferrari owners need to get a grip a drive their cars. These aren't investments , they will depreciate. Life goes on

True: most competent mechanics have the ability to work on a Ferrari. It is also true that most mechanics have the ability to screw one up.

Having owned a repair shop for 10 years, I can't tell you the number of times I saw shoddy and improper work done by mechanics to cars of previous owners that the current owner had to have sorted out.

That's one of the reasons we insist on good records from a well respected shop or dealer AND still insist on a PPI. If "anyone" could work on them equally well, they why would we care?

Oh, BTW, I saw a lot of screwed up MB's also....

 

Independent shops and dealers can screw up also. When was the last time you knew someone whose motor went " kaput". Point being there is nothing special about our cars. When comparing Ferrari to other modern cars , Ferraris are more simplistic. This is one reason many owner work on their cars.

 

Because they look so good freshly waxed with a diaper in the garage that it's a SIN to take them out?

Ya know, I'm just going to disagree with ya.

The next time you pull the motor out of a Testarossa, please tell me again "any" good mechanic can work on one.

Mid engine cars are never as simple as front engine cars, DOHC engines are never as simple as push rods, F1 gearboxes are never as simple as your standard torque convertor automatic, working around aluminum body panels are never as simple as steel... so I'm trying to find what is so "simplistic".

 

I agree.....it is too bad, but I know the prior owner of my car had it 16 years and according to his wife, rarely drove it other than to wash and wax it in the driveway. My car is 20 years old and has 17k miles on it.

 

Lot's of "preventive" maintenance adds up. It's just expensive insurance against expensive breakdowns.
