Didn't they have a successful Navy version of the Comet for Sub chasing? What did they do to fix it besides plastering over all the windows?

Yes, they had a sub patrol version called the Nimrod (Hunter) and subsequent versions of the commercial model, Comet 2,3,4,. Probably the safest airplanes in the air but by the time all the improvements were made, the 707 and DC 8 had come in to gobble up the orders.
My favorite story about the Comet vs. 707 was the encounter between a Comet approaching Gander at 30,000 west bound and a 707 climbing out east bound. The Comet captain took a jab at the 707 pilot and said, " 707, what are you doing way down there at 15,000?" The 707 pilot shot back, " Mach 82, what are you doing?" No answer from the Comet.
