Hi, after 13 months of installing a rebuilt engine into my 90 TR project, it runs great, fullfilling my best anticipations of how these cars feel and drive. I expected balky shifting as reported by many, but feel I might have deeper issues. Second takes moderate force to engage, as sometimes experienced on my 308. But if rpm is greater than 3,700, it will not enter fourth gear without gringing, or making a whizzing sound, and no engagement. Is this a possible shifting rod adjustment, or does the tranny need to be rebuilt? Any help from those in the know would be much appreciated! I will post pics of car soon, complete with 512 wheels. Thanks Ed.

You are describing shifter adjustment issues. The experience you describe shifting into 4th is an internal adjustment issue. The selector forks internally are adjusted too far apart allowing the selector pall to get between them.

You need to get inside and start from scratch.

Does this mean the headers must be removed, and the side cover removed from the trans to access the internals...?

Thanks to the replies. I too was wondering about engine out or not. If this could be done without dropping the engine, I'll be happy, it was alot of work! I do not remember any accessability to the gears from the top side. Otherwise, I'm now experienced at engine removal/installation, and all the nuances that go along with it- ie;modified tools, tight spaces and so many connections!!!

Hi again, my buddy and I thought we would play with adjusting the length of the shifting shaft. We added one turn, and took a test spin. To my overwhelming delight, it shifts much easier in all gears at all rpm values, no more refusal to enter forth! I'm so releived that the engin does not need to come out again! Yea!!!!!!!

    Hi Fast Eddy,

I have the same problem with the 4th gear on my 87 TR. Can you please explain what you mean by adjusting the length of the shifting shaft and adding one turn?

    Thanks
    SR
