I thought the vertical fins were to reduce or eliminate the eddy currents and improve fuel economy? Granted, they can be useful in this emergency situation, but I don't think that's why they are put on the big planes. As for powered rudders, what do you mean? The jack screw is controlled by an electric motor? Or are you referring to the regular hydraulic systems as "powered"?

 

You are thinking of winglets (vertical fins at the end of the wingtips), which aren't especially useful in improving stall behavior-- at least, in my experience. They do reduce drag and improve climb performance slightly, however.

Bob is talking about the tail. "Powered" in flight control terms typically refers to hydraulic power.

 

Isn't that aircraft equipped with inertia reel type safety lap belt and shoulder belt for both the pilot and copilot? If so why isn't he wearing it. It certainly would have prevented his face from striking the instrument panel.

 

Forgive me. I should have said vertical stabilizer and hydraulically powered rudder.

 

Bob- Fin is fine. In use since WW-I. Winglets are not fins. Fins can be below the fuselage to help maintain directional stability, like on the F-111 and Mig-23, but in general they refer to vertical stabilizers somewhat shaped like a shark's dorsal fin.

I'm loathe to admit that I am not as familiar with Jack Rousch as everyone else but I too wish him a speedy recovery.

I spelled his name wrong in the thread title also!!, I mostly learned about him and his love of aviation after his 2002 accident.

As Jack is an 8,000 hour plus pilot, who only obtained his license in 1993 - can't wait to see him up in a Premier II.

He also owns a firm that rebuilds and modernizes Packard-Merlin V-12s. He used his racing background to update the Merlin valvetrain by substituting the wiper lifter for a roller cam lifter. Pistons use a modern skirt design and use coatings that come from the auto racing world. His company had to jump through a lot of FAA hoops to do this.

 

I'd just love to hear one of his Merlins in an unlimited hydroplane!

 

i thought i read/heard oshkosh was the busyest airport in the world during the fly-in,,and i saw the military jets [fighters and cargo] landing on a different runway,maybe the corp jets need the different runway too

I'm no expert, but I think three-point landings are best done without the nose cone being one of the points.

The time for a go-around was probably higher than 200 ft agl.

I like the wide angle of this shot though.

 

Good thing he got it levelled out before impact, or it might have cartwheeled. Jack is a lucky man. I'll bet the pilots of those Cessnas taxiing by must have had big eyes when they saw what just missed them!
