Yes, lots of fun. Just take everything out (mats, loose items, etc), and go. FWIW,- I left the spare tire in the car. Some people take it out, some dont. Dom
Thanks Dom! Did you ever get into 3rd or 4th gear? How was headroom with the helmet on? (I'm borrowing one on Sunday) JIM
No, mostly 1st and 2nd. I think I may have tried 3rd, but don't remember now. Headroom is fine, but I'm a short guy (5'5"). I took my kids along as passenger's on a couple runs. They didn't have any issues with clearance. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Jim, Autox'd my old 74 when 1st bought it. Was on old 14" rubber, so the record book was safe! Im torso man so with the helmut on i had the seat raked back pretty far. I was touching the roof gently. She slid around pretty good and gave a good show! Have fun!!
Thanks Dave and Dave! I'm very excited. Its been years since I"ve AutoX'd and have never had the Ferrari on any 'track' although I sometimes drive it like I'm on one. I'll make sure that people take pics and maybe a video. JIM
Apologies in advance if this seems a little harsh... I took my car autocrossing...one time...a bunch of years ago. After 3 or 4 runs and never getting out of second gear, AND taking much of the rubber off my nice $800/set tires I said forget it and left. I don't mind burning up a set of tires if I'm storming down the front straight at 130+ with my hair on fire, but not for topping out at 55.....
Thanks!! I know what you mean, I much prefer to do TimeTrials vs autocross. However, sometimes, you just don't have the time, etc. Also, fact is, it does cost more overall to time trial than autocross (although on a track time basis, you probably get more for your $$ by timetrialing). Autocross is a good start. If you decide you have the speed bug, then by all means, sign up for a time trial. Given my situation (3 young kids, very little free time), I'll take anything I can get. Dom
It is fun, but left the event feeling ther exact same way. 2nd gear ~50mph ?? I also thought it was ridiculous how a 46hp MG Midget could show up a 308 GT4. I prefer the track. Laguna, Sears etc. This is where a Ferrari shines.
It's call driving skill. Anyone can drive fast - it's the braking and turning that takes talent. The autocross provides a good platform to learn that. The better you get at the autocross, the better you will be on the track. Give autocrossing another try. It will make you a bettter driver.
Well, pretty soon now Jim will find out how badly classified the old Fcars are. I like AutoX, but when you're not in the 'right' car combo for the class you're really SOL. The last time I looked, the 3x8 was in ASP (Street Prepared Class A) even if dead stock. In that class, one is running against modified C6s and Ford GTs. Good luck.
Tillman, The 308 has moved classes. I'm in CStock and am currently the only car registered in that class.... I'm going with 2 buddies that drive Corvairs. I'm trying to get my buddy with the Ford GT to come out as well. Should be a fun day! JIM
what u are describing is called "overdriving" which is common when an inexperienced driver drives a poorly set up car. A properly setup 308 in the hands of a competent driver can be quite competitive especially autox'g 'cause u don't need the Hp for the big straights. When I ax with the local p club I'm always as fast as the fastest guys in new p cars except for gt3's or heavily modified p cars. Have fun and watch the oil pressure on right handers. Cheers
Autocross is awesome, tons of fun especially if your region has their act together and is organized. The next one here is August 22nd and I'm planning on taking the 308 down to see what it can do. FWIW I'll bet money I can take my LeMons CRX and whip just about any stock 308 so it's not about winning (unfortunately!) just having fun with your car and enjoying all the comments as people gather around it.
Here's a fun pic from a few years ago before suspension upgrades . cheers Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sometimes looking good and sounding good are as good as it's going to get. Folks do love to see and hear the car at high rpms even if you're not among the fastest cars on track. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Awesome day today!!! The GT4 is a fun little track car. Once past the first corner, I ran in 2nd gear over the whole course which was a very long course. I'll definetly do this again! Great pics, the car looks awesome!! Glad you had fun. That's what owning one of these cars is all about- fun. Dom
If I were going to autoX my 308 I would consider getting a set of low profile wide body tires for those days. That way you get a little lower gear ratio which is what you need in this application. Since it's low speed the extra tire width would be a plus. The down is increased steering pressures. It might take a little getting use to before your times increase. You might kill a few extra cones too. But it could help with your times in the end.
