When I start my car (348) there's a growling noise that burbles up from the engine compartment. I hear it for the first 20 or 40 seconds, then as though someone threw a switch, it just stops growling. It sounds kind of like an angry tiger growling into a microphone and it changes pitch with the RPMs. Does anyone have a clue what this sound might be?

Part of the pollution control system in the 348 involves air injection into the exhaust manifolds during the warmup period. If this is what you're hearing, it's perfectly normal. This sound is most obvious if you listen through the air inlets behind the quarter windows.

See pages C14-15 in the owners handbook if you want information on how the system works.

It's fine relax. It may last longer when the car is colder like in the winter months.

Mine usually lasts for about 1/2 mile on a cold day. When it disengages, the odd sound will immediately stop.

You're lucky. The one on my 348 sounded like a box of rocks, so I removed it!! Best of luck with your new ride! :)

It does sound pretty cool; I like it too.

It's just funny how it sounds so mechanical, but it turns on and off more like an electrical toggle switch. It's very noticeable. :)

It is the 'little man' in the engine compartment shoveling coal into the firebox, to get the boiler to build pressure. This is standard on all 348s and why they are so 'reliable' :)!!!
