I'd go back to black, on the door handles... I will buy your North American bumper when you take it off...??? I'm building a collection of them in my garage, next to the Ducati....
25 years ago, i paid $1000 for a bare metal respray. Not the kind where the car was stripped to pieces and all hidden surfaces were sprayed, but removal of exterior paint, lights, bumpers, rear deck grills, interior door panels etc. Carpet, seats, windshield etc was left in car; the door jambs on teh doors them selves were sanded and painted over. Paint still looks great today. I did have one area of rust that appeared 3-4 years on a door after the respray, and had that fixed. You don't have to spend $12K or $15K, or $25K on a repaint. I was recent quoted $8K-$10K for a show quality bare metal respray, which did include windshield removal and removal and complete strip of door jambs, door inside panels, hood and rear deck undersides, etc. Doug
A friend of mine stripped down his car to bare metal and just took it to Maaco. They filled a couple small dents (maybe 1/16th of bondo) and primed and painted a beautiful coat of paint (3 or 4 coats of good quality 2-part). Total was around $1,500 bucks I believe. I was impressed with the finish - very, very nice, no dust or orange peel or waves, good gloss and nice depth and coverage. This isn't your grandpas Maaco paint job.
That's what I'm talking about!! Cliff, was this in Seattle? Which one? I can (am) stripping my car and disassembling everything. I'd love to check them out. Thanks, etip
Guys, I'm at Disneyland with my daughters this week so I won't be able to post any photos. I will post final pics and thoughts late next week. -Brian PS I'm glad to see all of the thoughts and suggestions on alternate approaches for paint jobs. This do it yourself mentality and outside of the box thinking is what makes this forum such a great resource for all of us.
Maaco repainted my black '89 Taurus SHO in the late 90's. It wasn't stripped to bare metal, all glass stayed in and I paid <$500, probably <$400. Granted black paint and black trim make overspray less of an issue (though the tape job was done pretty well done IMO), but they did a really nice job with the paint just as you describe. I was always amazed to see all the orange peel on $50k++ new luxury cars, then look at mine and see none. Remained smooth, blemish free, and could be easily shined up even after parking outside year round for over 6 years. The blue car in this thread looks great - someday I should do the same to my '85GTS. Probably has at least 2 layers of paint on most of the car, more on others. enjoy! Kurt
Hi there Eric! My friend I'm speaking of is my father. That was actually in Bellingham, not Seattle. The Maaco franchise in Bellingham is new, so they have good/new equipment and a clean facility. I don't have any experience with the Maaco folks in Seattle - don't even know if there is one in Seattle but I would guess there is....? Perhaps just drop by there and see how clean/organized the facility looks....and what some of the paint jobs coming out of there look like..... Cheers
I had my rx7 painted at Macco about 6 years ago. I told them not to use clear coat(to risky unless you really know what you are doing), well guess what they used it anyway. It looked great for 5 years. Then the clear coat started peeling off. In the last year, almost all of the clear-coat has left the hood. For older, non-important cars, I would use them, but never for a 308/328, unless it was a complete junker.
