First illustration is from the 1980 Owner's Manual.
Second is from the 1981 Owner's Manual.

1980 OM - zippered tire cover. It's also shown in the 1980 208 OM which is a carbed car. I can't find it in any other year but 1980. Does anyone actually have the zippered tire cover in their 1980 car or was it an unnecessary expense?

So, I picture Giovanni coming home that night and Maria, his loving wife, asking "What dida u do at da plant today to improve performance?" To which he replies, "I moved da tool pouch for better weight distribution".

I'm pretty sure that the jack and tool location is dependent on the spare tire type. Euro cars got the space saver spare and the tools up front. The U.S. cars had a full size spare--the tools wouldn't fit up front, hence the movement to the trunk.

Others please correct me if I'm wrong.

No one with a 1980 car ever seen the zippered spare cover? ( Maybe it got caught in a cost cutting program )
