You pull the four trouble lights out and unscrew the metal panel, removal from there is pretty obvious....might want to disconnect battery to be safe....

If you take your steering wheel off it gives you more room to work.

it's easy to remove the gauges, but you have to take out all of them at the same time. take out the little lights, remove the screws behind them. then the whole gauge cluster comes out. you'll see that the gauges are attached to the flat metal piece from behind and each has a wiring plug to make removing them easy.

Hey Tex (or anyone), can you just pull the trouble lights out? I am going to replace mine with a stock set but just wanted to know if they are pull out and push the new ones back in?

    Thanks,

yep, just pull them out. I've heard you can use fishing line to wrap around them if they're hard to get out. Mine were easy, just a slight pull and they came right out.

When you take out the lights, remember where they were. LOL. Mine are not in the correct spots. Two of them got reversed. Maybe I'll fix that sometime.

I broke an allen wrench off inside one of the screws on the steering wheel when I replaced the instrumentaion cover a while back.

    Be careful!

That's because you didn't use a 'hardened' 3mm Allen wrench. For some reason the factory puts 'Lock-tight' on the screws. If you don't use a case hardened wrench, the wrench will strip before the screw does.

It didnt strip, the allen wrench broke off inside of the screw. It was one of those allen wrenches that has a ball end hex. I had to drill out the screw, it was quit the ordeal.

I had a whole set of them that got thrown in the trash.

    Leason learned.

So true. The screws are very tight indeed. Hard to get out the first time for sure.

Breaking one screw requiring drilling and retapping can cost hours.

For steering wheel screw removal $8 is a small price for the absolute best tool - Assenmacher 1/4" socket 3mm allen -
