For me, 575. Hands down.
Jeff, I say 550 over C6 vette. I like how the 550 looks over the 575. I always felt the 550 Maranello was the ultimate GT car. If I had the money for a second F-car, a 550 would be in my stable. Since you already have the sporty high revving mid engine V8, a front engine v12 with low end torque Ferrari would be a wondeful complimentary car. They would be totally different types of F- cars that you would not get tired of using each. I almost made the mistake of buying a new Merc C63 instead of my F355 a couple of years ago. The Merc was definitely the faster car with newer technology and better creature comforts. The F355 was definitely a lot cheaper, but the prospect of owning one had a lot of concern, especially if you read a lot of the FChat threads. Went with my truly lifelong dream, and have never been happier. Go Ferrari all the way!
i guess it comes down to if its going to be a keeper as well... I wouldn't buy a zed to hand on to... in ten years... it just wont be that cool... in ten years... the ferrari will still be as cool if not cooler... and cool to me means many things and not just face value... I never say good night to my zed... but the ferrari yes... I never look forward to a sunday drive in my zed... but I do look forward to every on ramp... I hope that makes sense... in other words... over time i think the 550 will push more buttons for longer... the zed is an incredible performer (will run absolute circles around the 550/575) and value... for now...
That interior looks great. If Chevrolet put a Caravaggio like interior into the Vette to start with they'd have a much better chance to win business from people who don't tradionally buy American. I've had both C5 and C6 Z06s and the interior is without question the weakest link when compared to the world's best high-po production cars. I was really hoping that the ZR1 would come with a real interior, but it basically got the same Pontiac Grand Prix interior that they all get - very dissapointing.
While I regret that this thought enters my mind, I feel it is a sad and petty mentality that chooses a car based on your self image (How you feel others view you, thanks college.) Choose the car that you love regardless of how you want others to view you. It is you that matters. That being said, I would also have a very hard decision between the two, one that I consider daily as I am nearing the point in my life to seriously consider it. I have decided that I want the Ferrari. I am a major Ferrari nut, but I am also a major Corvette nut. Earlier in the thread, someone mentioned that Corvettes have no soul, and I have to disagree strongly; but I still prefer the Ferrari. I wouldn't aggressively track the Ferrari but I would definitely track it casually to at least test its strengths legally while being completely aware of the operating costs. Try them both, pick the one that moves you. Don't worry about the outsider's perception of you-- it is you that you should worry about pleasing. Just be sure to post pics and stories about your experience! Good luck and congratulations either way, they are both marvels and spectacular achievements in modern automobiles. You're a winner either way!
Warren, you misunderstand. Special cars appeal to enthusiasts because of the personality traits of the car and the owner. To use relationships as an analogy, there are some cars you just get along with better, sometimes for reasons that defy logic. To me, it doesn't compute that you can slide into the drivers seat of a 550, 575, C5Z or C6Z and not feel something other than excitement. They are different, should be appreciated as such. I own my cars for specific reasons, my own reasons, the most important and only ones that matter. I was seriously considering a Ferrari, trying to convince myself that Blampee's 355 in FerrariAds was the right car, right time. But it would mean "skipping over" an opportunity to own something else from my dream list of cars that I want more. Right car, wrong time. Every car I own is special. When was the last time you saw a Turquoise XJR with the inline six motor, factory supercharger, mated to a GM trans, that out performs the same year M5 produced by Coventry, England? You probably haven't. They imported 400 in 95 and this is one of approx a dozen in factory Turquoise. To everyone else, it's just a Jaguar that probably has one of those Ford V8's, driven by the 55+ crowd, and miss the feathered sidewalls that indicate this car is well balanced and sees more than 40mph in a 35. Have you taken an extended drive in the King of Imports and experienced real supercar like performance for pennies on the dollar and a full decade or more ahead of other sports car companies? 3.0L, 183ci inline six, 7,500rpm redline, 600hp on completely stock fuel and internals, tubular headers, titanium exhaust, capable of over 1g, a braking system unmatched until the Carrera GT 10 years later. A small part of Ferrari's reputation is based on them being unattainable for the "Normal Joe" besides their exotic nature. Conversely, you would be shocked and amazed at the amount of dick swinging worship in my wake whenever the Supra is prowling the streets or highways. Hey, to everyone else, it's just a Toyota, strange looking, possibly a newer 2-door model. And that's OK with me. I know a past owner of both of my current cars, before I became interested in these specific models, before they were put up for sale, and owning them both now just makes me laugh at what a small world/twist of fate it turned out to be. Ok, too much work after hours, too many beers. Time for bed.
I have the Benz e55 amg it is the ultimate family car. I'm about 60% 550 at the moment. I think that's where I'm going.
Get the Corvette. The 50 year old white males will think you're cool. Plus you won't have to trade in your gold chains or start shaving your chest. Your wife won't have to go on a diet or attempt to look younger than she is. The repair bills will be WAY less and you can support the good ol' U.S.S.R.......I mean USA. My mom had a Corvette groing up and she's pretty cool. You get so much car for your money. Like you said, you can park it anywhere and not worry about it being noticed. All valid reasons to get a Corvette.
it is funny that the only complaint that people really have with the vette is the interior, and yet GM never really did anything about it... sure they did the leather dash thing... but that doesn't fix the seats and some of the blandness. What i don't get is why don't they change the damn seats or at least offer an option for there non fat and balding clientele
+1 I admit to being the world's worst Vette owner. Whenever I see a Ferrari in traffic, the grass over there gets very very green.
Thanks I think your'e wrong on that count. The current Z06 may well be the Last EVER 427 Vette. That and the fact that Bob Lutz was overlooking the project and decided to make a car that would take on every sports car in the world performance wise is a big reason I bought mine. I have a 68 Vette too and people lose their minds when they see that car. Americans LOVE Vettes
your right it COULD be... who knows with GM... Also, the thing I get worried about and is something that isn't tangible or controllable is that the future of the car culture is dreary... kids now a days are hoping for a prius... not a GTI... or a Mustang or a camaro etc... its down right scary to me... PS I love my zed... but I wish i never sold my viper
True, thats bcus the youth has been brainwashed in school w Global Warming/Unsustainability BS and made to think we have to live in scarcity The other thing to consider about Vettes is the Z06/ZR1 are the last Vettes created by GM back when it was a publicly held company before it was nationalized and became property of the US Govt I highly doubt the US Govt is going to build another Z06 or ZR1 anytime soon which could make the current cars classics as last of the breed Sadly I see the future of Vettes returning to 1974 or so
I see vettes going uber cool in the future (they are now IMO.) The prototypes for the vette sure look cool (Transformer Movie) etc...
I guess this is FerrariChat, so my vote won't be surprising. Corvettes are all over the place, and no matter how you dress them up they've always felt cheap to me. Also, the government rescue of GM seems to have worked and the company is probably going to be able to pay back its loans, so it looks like Corvettes are going to continue to be around a long time. I.e., stupidly common. I'd go with the 550. I can't see them going much below $50K, and the styling IMHO is holding up very well for a modern car. Maintenance will hurt, but if you have a 355 you already know about Ferrari parts/service.
Best thing that can happen to Corvette is for GM to cut them loose and sell them to some enthusiasts w fat wallets
William, I love what you did with your car, My style is like that but much more suttle. Yeah Vettes are all over the place but the new ones are just so right in alot of ways. A buddy took his to Mosport (a track up here north east of toronto) and called it violent. The car looks great. THis IS a really tough choice, I am leaning to the 550 but I haven't totally decided yet. Your insights are much appreciated.
After reading the last post I noticed you are almost considered local. I would have to agree with the others, if you are asking for opinions/justification maybe the Corvette is the way to go. If you find out it isn't what you expected or wanted a simple sale won't lose you much, if any. It's the cost you pay for finding out what you truly want. My theory is that if you ask you have doubt and therefore pick the latter. Good luck with whatever you choose and as long as YOU enjoy it.
Quick question. Why not the ZR1? I mean if you want the exclusiveness of exotic car and still have the lower maintenance and the surplus of GM dealers across the country for service. Really I would take a ZR-1 over the Zo6, not because of performance because we all know with a couple of G's into the Zo6 will blast a ZR-1 but will not have that special spot of the clear hood and ZR-1 badges. What ever you get let us know!
550 imo, but I'm hugely biased. The 550 is one of the most beautiful Ferrari's build in my mind. If you want to be suble, get it in grigio titanio/bordeaux or blu pozzi/tan, or if you want a red car, rosso corsa/tan(or nero with red stitching).
