I know some of us here hate to hear rattling noises, well here is my story; I had a 30k engine out service done about 18 months ago by a very reputable authorized dealer, ever since I picked up my car, I've been hearing this annoying rattle, I checked every bolt making sure every thing is secure, I checked the bypass valve, the heat shields, and everything I read on Fchat associated with annoying noises. Today I decided to clean my car thoroughly, part of my plan was to remove the wheels clean them and put them back. I removed the rear right wheel and started cleaning the wheel well cover and lo and behold the wheel cover was rattling making that annoying noise I was after for almost 2 years, I found two holes missing the screws securing the cover to the frame, I guess the mechanic was overweighted when he was putting the car back together and decided to forgo a couple screws. Now the only noise I hear is the beautiful exhaust sound.

    Well done!

I just picked up a handful of the correct black sheetmetal screws to replace some that the dealer stripped and then left with 1/4 inch of the screw sticking out.

Congrats on making the rattle go away! It's always so satisfying when you find something like this and improve your driving experience for almost no money at all.

I just picked up my '98 355 F1and had complete engine out service done...I have the rattle. Doesn't sound like its coming from the wheel well although I will check it out. Mechanic said its a 355 trait due to the bypass valve. Is this true? Is there a remedy? Really annoys me.

Those valves do rattle before they go bad.

Also, I've had to replace those same wheel well screws so I think maybe they just work their way out over time. I replaced all of them when I did my cooling fan replacement project last year.

And this is not all that can rattle in the exhaust. I have had to tack weld the shields on the Y pipe that got loose and rattled. Also I recently replaced the oem muffler that had been rattling for the past 12k+ miles (three years)...it was an internal baffle. Replaced muffler, all good now. ;)
