The last race at the Historics at Laguna Seca last weekend was a F1 race for models between 1966 and 1983. Ferrari was represented by a 1969 and a 1971, much older than most of the field and it showed, as that ran at the back of the pack. But they looked cool! They all looked cool. There were some mean machines out there during the weekend, but the F1s didn't look like another class of cars on the track, they looked like an entirely different sport.
I really went for the Bugattis, though, and I wasn't disappointed. The anouncer said it was the largest gathering of Bugattis in a long time. Besides the mob of Bugs that ran the race there were many roadsters, etc in the pits. The biggest thrill, though, was the Veyron that set the land speed record in Germany at the VW track, that Wednesday. They must have hauled it off the track and straight to the plane. It did a lap or two of its own and then led the parade lap for the racers. There was another Veyron in the pits.
Another feature was the Scuderia Alfa from 1931/2 that Nuvolari drove. It was hauled over from England and ran a respecable race with other period cars, in a thrilling race led by two ERAs that swapped the lead numerous times. The owners of the Alfa were very friendly and gave me a copy of the history of the car, which I need to unpack and read.

As soon as I get around to download my pics, I'll post some as well.

The organizers in their infinite wisdom decided to run the F1 cars on Sunday. Which of course is Pebble Beach day. So I only saw them on Saturday in the garage. Oh well. Then again most of these cars the ones that run regularly at other venues and I saw them at Road America already.

For me the highlight was Gurney reunited with his Eagle.

I took a ton of the Amon Ferrari: That's the next 1/12 model I'll be building.

I saw them all run the Saturday the week before for free at the test day.

I was there for the Lotus Sport Evora CUP GT4 and the T125 launch. :D

While realizing this is a Ferrari site, does anyone have any pics of the Eagles on hand? I've been a big DG fan since I met him in '67, and I wanted to go to the race this weekend, but I just couldn'y pull it off.
    Thanks.

Isn't that him in the Eagle?

I'm not sure, but I thought it was.

Both guys....great pictures. Classic F1 cars from before my time are soooo cool. When I was in Canada for the GP earlier this year, the classics were definately one of the highlights from the weekend.

    Very cool.

You're probably thinking of my shot of the Ensign. The 8 (!) velocity stacks (!) should have been a hint. ;)

    Definitely no 126C2 there.

These historic GP cars are always more or less the same group in the US and a different one in Europe. Rarely do you ever see a car from the turbo era amongst them, which is no surprise given how easily they blew up and how impossible they were to drive.

I'm not even sure I've ever seen a 126 C2 IRL in any kind of museum. I'm sure Ferrari SpA has one in their collection, but that might be about it.

The only turbo-era cars that I've seen running, and it's only been one or two times, and not recently, were with the turbos removed, rendering them rather punchless!

You're saying a 1.5 liter V6 with no turbo? Yikes. Poor little thing.

I put that ChaseCam and Traqmate on the Ensign and, working with Bud, helped him figure out how to stick it on the pole for the Pre-Reunion Sunday race by more than a second. Bud's also got a fantastic 312 T5 ex-Villeneuve that he finished 2nd at the Tremblant HGP event in July.

He wasn't able to get the Ensign to work quite as well during the Reunion weekend, but working with Michael Fitzgerald, helped him finish second in his Williams FW08 (#6) on Sunday.

Here's the pole lap for the Ensign... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz1syOwnS2w
