If I owned a 458 right now, I would scream! This is a major flaw in the design. I went to the unveiling of the 458 in Chicago and specifically asked the spokesman about the issue of heat in the 458 he said that Ferrari designed the rear to re circulate the air for aerodynamics purposes but Ferrari obviously did not pay attention as to the heat the engine generates in the back. They should have designed an escape route for the heat. I bet this is what’s causing the fires in the engine.

trust me, the ferrari fire extinguisher will have no use once theres a fire.
actually using 6 of them will not put the fire out, dont ask me 'cause i wasnt there.
i think that option is mostly for looks and peace of mind.
my gt2, 599 and scud has one, took it out the 1st day i went out.

There is a campaign on the 458 involving a modified breather pipe. My dealer recived my kit from the factory this morning so I'll be having the work done next week.

I guessed that. Does anyone know what the flaw is?

Well you can simply start with the petrol tanks near the engine, how many Porsche 911 Turbo's do you see going up in flames, cos the petrol tank is in the front ....

Then shouldn't the F430 also have had a fire problem? I doubt that many mid-engine cars have their tanks up front.

Exactly! If we expect at least this much from a Prius a quarter million dollar Ferrari should provide no less basic safety.

Considering age of Dinos and 308s, and not so many of them have burned, it's not the location of the tank that's the problem. While this may exacerbate an existing fire, it is not the cause per se.

Man, you know that the 911 is a "special" car, rear engine, etc... they had no other option than putting the gas tank in the front, but I really doubt that this is the best solution for a mid engine car.

out of curiosity, I'm sure the car was insured and the ins co will pay the owner, lien holder for the car - but since this seems to be a mfg defect or problem - do they go back to FNA and ask for reimbursement?

I mean - who is to fault here for the fires - def not the owner / driver.

so the car owner now needs to wait a year or more for a replacement, or does fna move him up in the queue for a new car?

If and when it becomes a torch just get the hell out. Forget the fire extinguisher. Better it burns down to the tires and let the insurance company buy you a new one. Rather than possibly "saving " the car and getting it back in a repaired state. Resale is still going to be shot and my being given a repaired 458 isn't going to restore my confidence in the car. Me, I would be insisting on a replacement period. So like I said....Let it burn!

Get the insurance check for replacement value and buy a used one at a discount. Pocket the difference and wait for the new scud or spider version in 18 months or less.

It may have something to do with direct injection and 1750 psi in the fuel lines !!!! My two cents!!!!

My daddy always used to say "never be the first to try the new or the last to use the old", My new Spyder should fall about in the middle.Never try to put the fire out and risk being killed in an explosion to save the car for "The Goodhands People" .who would return to you a car you could never trust or sell. The insurance folks couldn't care less about you.Get away, get safe and collect your check for the full ACV including added value unless the policy limits are "agreed value".For many reasons Ralph Nader would not approve of this car.Yep,there's a problem.

Don´t think so: the California has direct injection too and no one toasted yet.

As someone mentioned in a previous post....There is a campaign to install some type of "vent kit". Apparently newer build 458's are receiving this mod at the factory. I'm waiting on my dealer to check my VIN and see if I am good to go or require a trip to the shop.
Hopefully someone will post the VIN's of the affected cars.

Also...FYI, if you bounce the rear diffusers on a speed bump or other; the lower portion of the screen surround will crack. Mine came pre-broken :(
