Transmission noise?

I think you will love the magneride update! The comfort mode is REALLY comfortable now, just hides all the bumps in the road.

Jumping in here late, but found this thread instead of starting a new one.

I just had a similar thing happen. I've been fine for 8 months of owning. Recently there seems like a minor buzzing noise coming from underneath the driver/passenger area. I shrugged it off as the converter or something. Yesterday however, for the first time, I was slowing down to a stop light a couple of times. (comfort, auto, air on) As i was braking i heard a loud 'buzzing' noise seeming to come from underneath. It was hard to tell if it was coordinated with the downshift, the braking, or the fact i had the AC on as it was 100 in So. Cal. Scared the living H out of me. Didn't re-ocurr after the car was fully warmed up and driven for awhile.

Thanks all for your prior posts. I'm going to contact dealer and will post anything new i find out. Let me know if you've had similar.

 

I've had the exact same thing as well. I have been talking to the dealer about it and I'm not sure if it's the gearbox thing since I've already had the software reflashed. They are not sure what's going on but they've asked me to try to document as many details as I can whenever it happens so here's what I know:

It sounds like a buzzing noise and the first time I heard it I thought it was an ABS thing. It sounds like it's coming from the drivers side front wheel area but can't be sure.

It's not happening regularly but if it does, it's usually in the first five minutes or so on the first drive of the day or before it's had a chance to warm up. Also in comfort mode, auto, (not sure about AC though) and always while slowing down to a stop or a turn. For me it's always in the neighborhood so while slowing down from 30mph or so.

I've never experienced it while shifting manually and since I haven't driven in sport/auto very much, I don't know about that yet.

I'd love to hear if any others have had the same thing going on....

 

I seldom drive in auto, but heard the sound the other day, warming up with about 1.25 miles on it from the cold start, not in auto but it may have been downshifting itself as I approached a corner, not sure. It was an interesting buzzing sound. My top was down and it seemed to be coming from the left side of the car.

 

sg69, yes that's exactly it. Curious that i took it out the next day and not a thing. Service says it is safe to drive and that Ferrari has something to minimize it. I'm unsure what it is at this time as we had an email exchange vs. call. The local guys are real good so I'm confident i'll get it figured out. It will be a couple weeks before i can get it in, but i'll post what i find when i do.

 

I got the sound back as well 2 days ago after I got it checked by the dealer a while ago.
I feel your pain, very frustrating.

 

If any of you guys have a phone with a video camera or voice recorder and can remember next time this happens, you might try recording a clip of the sound, and then right after its gone away record a clip of normal operation, so that your tech can hear the problem normalized for the same recording equipment. I'd also be curious to hear what it sounds like.

 

It happens too quickly without warning and only lasts for a second or two, tops. Then, may not occur again for days or more.

Odd. Sounds like it will be really hard to diagnose if it's so intermittent and short-lived. I'll ask my dealer about it next time I'm there to see if they've dealt with it for other customers.

 

Did anyone ever get the buzzing noise sorted out? I have a 2011 Cali that I have had since new and never had the issue before but it has now happened twice in the last few weeks.

 

I have a 2010 california 10,000 km and getting buzzing so frustrating..any tips?

Update: Promised I would be back with more information if I got it. After Ferrari recommended a get a new gearbox, I found a great shop willing to look into the issue further. Got the car back today, drove it for several hours, and so far, could not reproduce the noise. Hopefully, it stays this way, and will update either way. For those of you who are curious, here is a verbatim from the work order on the diagnosis and fix:

"Client states there is a buzz noise when quickly shifting from 2nd to 1st when coming to a stop. Happens intermittently. Diagnose and advise. Pulled gearbox DCT gear oil filler and found severely overfilled with intermixed gear oil and DCT fluid. Fount DCT side severely under filled. Noise coming from air pumping through DCT system from low fluid. This was caused by failed drive gear seals in intermediate case. Removed transmission and disassembled. Cleaned and replaced failed seals. Rerouted wiring harness in accordance with updated factory specifications to reduce friction points. Inspected harness during process and confirmed good. Reassembled transmission and resealed with silicone. Reinstalled in vehicle. Filled gear and DCT oil. Performed multiple road-tests to confirm repair and that noise is no longer present."

 

Please keep us posted. What did the repair wind up costing?

 

$6288 in labor, $1280 in parts. USD.

I find the diagnostics very interesting on this one, firstly if the seals were to leak you would have DCT fluid or gearbox oil coming out of the weep holes unless they’ve been plugged in. Secondly if your seals did fail the DCT fluid pressure is much higher so you would lose a lot of fluid and you would run your Dual Clutch dry hence you may of caused some damage to your clutch
