Do you want the "best" price, or the "best" man for the job (or the "best" job)?

Top dollar does NOT equal best work. I know of top notch independent shops that do better work than the dealer but don't charge the same.

The key, as in anything, is to know quality when you see it and to not assume $$$ automatically equals quality or value. Does anyone here really believe a top dollar Ferrari is better built and designed than a Mercedes? My MB SL600 is built like a swiss watch compared to far more expensive Ferraris. Money doesn't always guarentee quality. Ask the owners of those roasting new 458 Ferraris!

Best price: order the stuff from Ricambi and do it yourself. The savings alone will pay for all the tools, the lift, and beers.

I think EZ is a class action lawyer or something along those lines, so doing it himself would probably be the most expensive option given his opportunity cost.

A really good point you make is to order the parts himself. Then bring the box of parts to an independant. The "cheapest" service may have high quality labor, but it isn't going to include Hill Engineering tensioner and throw-out bearings, Scuderia Rampante hoses and connector kits, etc.

Only one place to go: Eugenios in Glendora. If your lucky he will only have a 6 month waiting list, but it could be a year. A major price starts at about $7000, but could be more if he finds other parts that need replacing. He will give you a photo album when the car is completed of before and after pics documenting the entire engine out service. Anyone who has met him will tell you, he is the man. Fair, honest, no games. Before I knew better, I paid $11,000 at a local Ferrari Dealership for the same service. Most FCA so-cal members rave about him. Good luck!

Hmmm. So using that logic, should or does EZ bring his own food to a restaurant and ask them to cook it for him. I think not. My shop provides extremely high quality workmanship and we use Hill Engineering parts and the entire Scuderia Rampante product line. We're not the most expensive game in town, nor are we the cheapest. There are many outstanding independent shops throughout the USA. However, none of them are the "cheapest".

I think it is "pound foolish" to shop on price. I am more than willing to pay the piper, as long as it is done right the first time, and on time. As David points out, it can be a bit touchy to show up with a trunk full of parts for your service provider to install, so one must be respectful. I discussed this at length with Mark G at Ferrari of Seattle before they started my major service a couple years ago, and they were okay with me providing Hill Engineering tensioner bearings, Ricambi America silicone coolant hose set (Dave Helms were not available then) and Kingsborne plug wires. They provided everything else.

I've brought my own wine to a restaurant and they decant and serve it - maybe you find that bizarre as well? ;)

Kudos to you. There aren't a lot of shops that are familiar with HE and SRI products and the host of other great non-OEM options that exist.

Opportunity costs do factor in, but nothing like getting one's hands dirty and that sense of accomplisment! A man should know how to work with his hands and fix things! Grunt! Grunt!

I may just ship her off to England where they charge $2k. Ferry her to Europe, driver her there for a few weeks then ship her back to Cali, all for the price of an American service! Go figure!

    Check it out!

Crickey isn't Euginio down there? Just take it to him! Depends on what you need but independents about 7k and dealer about 10K. Do it yourself for 2-10K depending on your aptitude. 15K if you foul it up. Just some rough numbers and no guarantees unless you take it to experienced people. Brain Crall bump!

Then simply get in touch with Bruce (Plugzit) and have him assist you with the major. He helped me with mine and it was an awesome experience. There is a certain intangible benefit that makes the ownership experience that much better when you are tearing up the road, the car is behaving perfectly, and you had your hand in making it that way.

If you guys are paying 7Gs and up down there for a 30K service, then you are getting hosed. That service should only run 5K max. If problems are found then of course it will run the cost up. I asked how many hours it would take for a "normal" 30K service with no other problems and the answer is 27 hours. Many are quoting 40 hours because the owners dont know any better. My guy use to take the engine out of a challenge car after the race and put the spare in before the next morning.

Any shop out there that does not know about Hill engineering parts is not worth the time as all good shops know of them.
As for doing it yourself....you are taking a big chance there. I have the mechanical know how but I am not a Ferrari mechanic and my mechanic has Ferrari challenge experience. When my engine is out he shows me all the little tricks that only the most exprienced F-car mechanics know. These little "tricks" or "knowhows" are what make your car run like a clock for the next 5 years.
